17:15 Newcastle – Fox Tail

He has a very good record when fresh, and a look back at some of his races suggests he has the back-class to be fully effective now. He’s stepping back down to the mile trip for the first time in ages but Fox Tail seems to race quite enthusiastically so that will help. The steady-climbing mile at this track is going to make him very tough to pass on the front end.

17:30 Dundalk – Building Bridges

He ran a stormer at this venue a couple of starts ago in November. The step up in distance back on the level will surely suit his style, and they don’t have to be too aggressive in the early stages. Just just find a nice rhythm and produce Building Bridges late to win.

17:45 Newcastle – Jumira Bridge

He looked very unlucky not to get another victory on the board at Chelmsford last time. He doesn’t win too often, but the yard are really starting to hit form at the moment and Jumira Bridge has also been gifted a decent starting stall position. He can make amends for that unlucky defeat now.

18:45 Newcastle – Tathmeen

I am not expecting him to get back up to his peak rating of around 85, but there is just no getting away from the fact that this nine-time all-weather winner Tathmeen is dangerously well treated off a rating of 53. The two main dangers are reappearing from an 185 and a 112-day absence and so are not guaranteed to be fit and firing. The selection comes in off the back of a real good effort, just 11 days ago.

19:15 Newcastle – Mehmo

Mehmo escaped the penalty for his Southwell success in an apprentice race just three days ago and already has some very strong form in the locker at this track from much higher marks. Trainer Michael Appleby has started the campaign in great fashion and will no doubt have his sights firmly set on training more than 100 winners for the calendar year for the fourth consecutive season.

19:30 Dundalk – Miracles in May

Miracles in May is a slightly better performer on a synthetic surface rather than the turf and doesn’t look badly weighted on his best performances at this venue. In seven races around Dundalk, he has finished in the top three on five occasions and has only gone down in a few tight finishes for the top spot as well. We also have the added bonus of a very experienced claimer A C Persse who is still taking off the 7lb.
