BROOMFIELD PRESENT justified support when making a successful hurdling debut at Ffos Las in November, staying on well to land the spoils by a length and a half. A winning Irish pointer, he seems sure to improve as his stamina is drawn out further having been the first of the principals off the bridle last time. The step up in trip today will certainly be in his favour and it looks an excellent opportunity for him to make it two from two under Rules despite having a penalty to carry.
IMPERIAL PRIDE has shown little in three starts over hurdles to date, but she should be suited by this markedly longer trip and could be worth a chance to leave those efforts behind. She shaped like a stayer when sixth on her handicap debut at Taunton a few weeks ago, never threatening to land a blow having been under pressure for most of the final circuit. It’s still early days and there should be races to be won with her from a BHA mark of 93 when the emphasis is more on stamina.
BEAT THE EDGE was unlucky not to win when filling the runner-up spot at Wetherby on Boxing Day, looking in control when slithering on landing two out and badly losing momentum. He was still beaten less than two lengths and probably would have won quite comfortably had he jumped the second last cleanly. Either way, that was his best effort yet over fences and a 7 lb climb in the weights might not be enough to prevent him from gaining compensation.
GENERALOFFICER maintained his unbeaten record over hurdles with a straightforward victory at Musselburgh last month, justifying very short odds as he made all to land the spoils by three and three-quarter lengths. This will be toughest test yet under a double penalty, but he is likely to progress further and should take plenty of beating once again for Donald McCain, who is seeking his third win in this race since 2019.
ECLAIR DE GUYE has returned this season with a couple of solid runs in defeat, including when last seen finishing fourth at Market Rasen on Boxing Day. He was beaten over 11 lengths but looked competitive for a long way, still holding every chance entering the straight before the first three pulled clear. A thorough stayer, he is clearly in good heart and could be worth a chance to take advantage of his reduced mark, lining up here from 1 lb lower in the weights than when registering his last victory at Huntingdon in December 2020.

YOU SOME BOY was a bit disappointing when finishing only fifth at Wetherby last time, but he possibly found the run coming too soon after just nine days off. Before that he’d produced a career-best effort to fill the runner-up spot at Kelso, sticking to his task well to pass the post less than a length behind the winner. Given a good break since Wetherby, he is still on a workable mark and appeals as very much the one to beat if the application of cheekpieces can eke out a bit more improvement.
EL MUCHACHO made a mockery of his opening mark with an emphatic victory on his handicap debut at Plumpton 10 days ago, hitting the front two out and quickly forging clear from there to win by seven and a half lengths with plenty in hand. This will be a quicker-than-ideal turnaround, but he remains with potential after just three starts over hurdles and even a repeat of his latest effort should be good enough to see him follow up under a 7 lb penalty.
