13:15 Newbury – Gamaret

It seems a bit mad to be tipping a horse having its first run over fences in a handicap chase at Newbury. However, Gamaret could never have a better opportunity than he gets here. Gallic Geordie loves the track and if Gamaret falters he will take advantage off a mark 9lbs higher than when he won this race last year.

13:35 Warwick – Lord Snootie

Lord Snootie won a point to point and was sold for £70,000. He has been getting the hang of things over hurdles since and steps up by almost a mile in trip for his first run in a handicap and has to be of interest, especially if the market speaks favourably. Lucky So And So comes from a yard in very good form. Nicky Martin even had a 200/1 winner at Taunton yesterday so handicap debut should be noted.

13:50 Newbury – Pikar

Black Poppy was calling to me when I looked at this first. The Kerry Lees charge ran over fences last time and run a very good race behind a smart performer and really likes this track as he showed when winning a handicap hurdle over half a mile shorter earlier this year. The only concern is he bled after running last time. That makes me go with the form horse in the race, Pikar. The 2nd and 3rd from the Chepstow race have franked the form and the run at Haydock behind Jonbon sticks out.

14:10 Warwick – Gwencily Berbas

David Pipe trains this 11-year-old and a fitting of blinkers first time should ignite the flame. Gwencily Berbas has some good form to his name, loves a marathon trip, and is not badly handicapped on some of his best form. He gets the nod.

14:25 Newbury – Grumpy Charley (each way)

There are a couple of bits of form for this horse that make me want to be on the side of Grumpy Charley. His run behind Bravemansgame here last year looks really good. Plus, his beating of Fern Hill at the track at this meeting last year is also strong form. The ground was very bad when he ran at Bangor and he looked badly in need of the race.

15:00 Newbury – Hermes Allen

Lots of potential improvers in here. We also have some Irish interest with Joyeux Machin and Kansas City Star coming over. I don’t think there is much between those two, certainly not as much as the betting suggests. Kansas City Star will be much better suited to going left-handed than when running at Fairyhouse last time.

Crambo is better than the bare form and Idalko Bihoue is interesting for Nigel Twiston-Davies. Hermes Allen is as good a jumper of a hurdle as you will see for a novice. The others will have to match him to beat him and that will be hard. Paul Nicholls has run some good horses in here and he will be hoping this lad turns out like Denman or Bravemansgame.

15:35 Newbury – Nothin To Ask

I was really impressed with Nothin To Ask’s win at Chepstow when getting the better of Fernhill. That horse has franked the form since and I still think there’s more to come from this horse who won at Doncaster despite having to make the running which he didn’t enjoy.
