SELFISH BRIAN was a winner for John Quinn at Leicester earlier in the year from a 1 lb higher mark and he looks the one to beat in a weak race having hit the frame on both starts for this yard. He didn’t seem in love with the longer trip at Wolverhampton last time, but a mile and a half should be spot on for him, and he represents an in-form yard. Sheharz and Selecto complete the shortlist.

A case can be made for several here but there is an argument that ROYAL CAY is the best treated so he looks the percentage play. He was disappointing on his handicap debut but quickly bounced back when third in heavy ground at Doncaster last month, pushed along from around halfway and staying on well to the line. The return to seven furlongs will suit and he looks the one to beat. Lady Wormsley, who was a very good second over course and distance last time, rates the biggest threat.
13:08 – Great State
GREAT STATE showed plenty to work on amidst obvious greenness on debut and built on that promise as expected when opening his account at Wolverhampton at the end of last month. He still looked in need of the experience – flashed his tail – but saw his race out strongly and will appreciate this step up to six furlongs now. He can defy a penalty and prove too strong for Al Muzn, who showed something to work on at Lingfield.

BARENBOIM has been a revelation since switching to David O’Meara, winning three of his five starts, and he was impressive when landing some nice bets at Kempton on Wednesday. He won going away that day despite the run of the race not suiting him and he will be incredibly hard to beat turned out under a penalty back up to a mile and a half. Bugle Major needs everything to fall right but he’s well weighted these days and is capable of getting involved.
14:10 – Capparis
CAPPARIS reacted positively to first-time cheekpieces when third at Wolverhampton 12 days ago and, less exposed than most of these, is worth a chance to build on that with the return to this longer trip in her favour. Mister Falsetto ran well at Doncaster when last seen in the summer and is a possible threat if primed for this comeback run, while Big Dutchie also makes the shortlist after a decent second at Wolverhampton last time.
14:43 – Kraken Power
KRAKEN POWER has a poor strike rate (just one win from 30 starts) and hasn’t won for two and a half years, but he continues to leave the impression that his turn may be near, unlucky not to finish second given the trouble he met over course and distance last week. Paul Mulrennan takes back over in the saddle now and he contests a weaker race, so he may be worth chancing again. Catherine Chroi shaped as if still in form here last time and is likely to be on the premises, too.
15:13 – Peachey Carnehan
PEACHEY CARNEHAN has a good record at this sort of level but hasn’t been seen to best effect the last twice back on the all-weather. He was left poorly placed in a race which wasn’t run to suit at Wolverhampton last time, making headway once the race was over, and is worth treating as still in form. This track suits him better and he can bounce back now. Epeius and Jems Bond are a couple of others to consider.
