One of my favourite Christmas traditions is to wake at 6am on the Sunday of Hong Kong International Racing Festival and enjoy the top class flat action rather than the slower National Hunt plodders.
This years festival actually feels light on a superstar but does make up for this in proper competitive racing with deep and intriguing races.
We saw some bets on Stone Age before the draw, which was driven by a tipping line rather than clever money. Stone Age drew stall one which isn’t great nor is it a negative, but other horses drawn around him have more gate speed. Glory Vase is looking to go back to back with Hong Kong Vases having beaten off a game Pyledriver in last year’s renewal – but has only ran once this year and that race isn’t anything positive to report. However, his Japanese compatriot Win Marilyn is trending in the right direction having been second in the Queen Elizabeth Cup and a small each-way bet could be the play.
The Hong Kong Sprint is always a great race but the draw is crucial and early speed is a must. Anything drawn higher than stall nine will require a lot of good luck and a lifetime best performance. Naran Huleg is drawn stall two, had a decent prep run in Japan in October and is a Group 1 winning sprinter. He will go off shorter on the Hong Kong Tote.
Golden Sixty will be very hard beat here but I am a man to play every edge so I have been watching replays to try find what can run into the places. I’ve landed on the Ryan Moore ridden Salios at a double figure price. He has been mixing it in good Group 1’s over a mile all year without winning one and was third behind Golden Sixty in this race last year.

It’s nearly 9am now and I will be thinking of breakfast, which will be either steak and eggs in the clubhouse or cornflakes at home. Romantic Warrior is the strong NAP on the card. He is the rising star from the Land of the Rising Sun and will enter the equation for ‘most looked forward to star’ appearing in Europe or Dubai in 2023. This will be his stiffest task to date, taking on some very good Japanese horses but I am firmly of the opinion that we will be talking as much about Romantic Warrior as we will be about the John Durkan winner if Punchestown goes ahead on Sunday.
