14:10 – Chinx Of Light

CHINX OF LIGHT can bounce back from his recent fall at Limerick and give trainer John McConnell back-to-back victories in this Beginners Chase following success with Streets of Doyen last year. The son of Shantou seems versatile ground wise and looks open to further improvement having done well for connections over hurdles. He broke his maiden for Barry Fitzgerald here last October and secured a further two victories for his new handler at Down Royal and Wexford this season.

He appreciated the step-up in trip and won comfortably on both occasions before finishing a solid second on his chasing debut at Kilbeggan. The mount of Simon Torrens finished ahead of both Alfa Mix and Captain Kangaroo in the midlands and can see off all rivals to claim the opener on Galway Hurdle day. Fakiera looks the main danger having finish second at Limerick with Western Run hoping the use of cheekpieces can bring out further improvement following successive runs at Cartmel.

14:45 – Sole Pretender

SOLE PRETENDER can remain unbeaten over fences and land this 2-mile 2-furlong Novice Chase for local trainer Norman Lee. The son of Gold Well has been a wonderful servant for connections who last year finished a solid eighth to Saldier in the Galway Hurdle. He’s a former winner of the Grimes Hurdle (rated 150) at Tipperary and recently finished second in the same race in preparation for his return to fences here at Ballybrit.

He won easily on his chasing debut at Ballinrobe in late May before following up as expected when given away plenty of weight to the opposition at Roscommon. This looks a cracking renewal with all these securing victories over fences heading into this contest. Ganapathi represents Willie Mullins who has won this race three times in the past five-years, while Call Me Lyreen is another who was rated highly over hurdles and has progressed over fences with wins at both Kilbeggan and Wexford.

15:55 – Nectaris

Jessica Harrington and Shane Foley are enjoying an excellent week and can secure further success with NECTARIS in the Listed Corrib Fillies Stakes. The daughter of Sea The Moon has improved with racing this season having jumped from handicap company to be competitive in stronger races at both Longchamp and Fairyhouse in recent months. She showed her battling qualities when landing a Premier Handicap at the Curragh in May and can go close under a forward ride from a low draw in stall 1.

This 7-furlongs looks her ideal trip with the filly also having course experience under her belt having broken her maiden here last year. She’ll race handy again and with the Harrington horses in great form, it’s hard to see her outside the our extra places. Elsewhere, Affogato and Surrounding are hoping to reverse the form with Nectaris from Fairyhouse and it might be the Joseph O’Brien pair of Night Of Romance and Voice Of Angels who turn out to be her biggest dangers.

16:30 – Hors Piste

Willie Mullins has farmed this race in the past decade with a total of six victories which includes the last four renewals. The champion trainer runs HORS PISTE on this occasion, a daughter of Kapgarde who has won two of her five starts since moving from France to Closutton. She took her chance and wasn’t disgraced in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham having easily won her maiden hurdle at Clonmel back in February.

She ran well again and got closer to Love Envoi when finishing third at Fairyhouse at Easter before hacking up as expected in novice company at Kilbeggan in May. She comes here fresh, is versatile ground wise and looks the obvious winner with Paul Townend in the saddle. Falcon Eight is clearly a danger with Dermot Weld’s horses returning to form, while Salvador Ziggy and The Friday Man for Gordon Elliott should be challenging for minor money.

18:10 – A Law Of Her Own

The closing bumper on Galway Hurdle day looks an open affair and I’m happy to take a punt on A LAW OF HER OWN for trainer Peter Fahey. The daughter of Lawman should relish the stamina test of Ballybrit on her rules debut having won a Broughshane point-to-point for Matt O’Connor back in May. The Fahey team previously won this race with Dayna Moss in 2017 and Derek O’Connor, who has already been amongst the winners this week takes the ride.

What Path is worth taking on having not set the world alight so far for Willie Mullins and has been a beaten favourite on his last two starts at Ballinrobe and Downpatrick. Brookie and Moonovercloon arguably bring the best form to the table with Tony Martin’s runner placed twice at Leopardstown and Killarney. Moonovercloon finished fourth over hurdles at Navan last December with plenty of subsequent winners which included graded success for The Goffer and Highland Charge.
