14:20 Cartmel – Bashful Boy

A cracking prize for this class two handicap hurdle and there is plenty of chaff amongst the wheat. Finest View has gone up from a base mark 108 to 131 in gathering up a four timer. However, he only just scrambled home last time out over this course and distance and needs plenty more, taking on much better rivals and in a bigger field to boot.

Old boy, Snookered, comes here fit from the flat and with a first time visor on. The eight-year-old is nicely treated off a mark of 125 and cannot be dismissed at a double figure price especially as the likely fast pace will play to his strengths.

He would be the main danger to BASHFUL BOY who looks nicely progressive and has the impressive young Philip Armson.

He had a straightforward task at Market Rasen last time out, but it was the way he went through the race that impressed me, but he does have his quirks which is why I think this turning track will suit him. To further aid this former 78 rated stayer on the flat, David Pipe has enlisted the help of blinkers for the first time and if they bring about improvement then a mark of 122 looks very playable here.

14:40 Curragh – Hightimeyouwon

A typically competitive six furlong handicap for the track and you could easily take five against the field and not have a placed selection in your team.

Dermot Weld’s charge, HIGHTIMEYOUWON, though, looks interesting on a number of counts. Firstly, the assessor has given him a real chance off a mark of 83, won off a pound higher, he has plenty of pace around him and was hardly suited by the run of the race last time out when down the field in a very similar contest. His overall record at the track, both over six and seven furlongs at this level, is very solid and if anything there is not as much strength in depth in this contest as there was a month ago.

Of his rivals, I have the most respect for the hat-trick seeking Lord Dudley (probably needs a career best) and Swift Flight. The last named is surely better than his disappointing run at Tipperary last time out over the minimum trip.

15:00 Uttoxeter – Irish Prophecy

Some old staying handicap chase friends are due to rock up in this year’s renewal of the Summer Cup and with only one course and distance winner in the field, Sizing Cusimano, and several of these well treated on their best form it looks a real conundrum. However, those are the circumstances that best suit this ‘value column’ and the likes of Francky Du Berlais, top weight Exelerator Express and Destrier all made my short list. However, I finally fell down on the side of the Emma Lavelle runner, IRISH PROPHECY, who has been threatening to win a race of this nature for some time.

His best recent run came when readily winning off a mark of 137 in a much smaller field, when he fenced for fun and came home quite a cosy winner. Since then, the nine-year-old was pulled up in the Badger Beer, behind shock winner Rocco, and was subsequently given the winter months off by his astute trainer. He returned from a 175-day break at this track on the final day of March when 16 lengths behind Francky Du Berlais, but was patently only about 75% fit that day, but only backed out from between the final two fences and should be cherry ripe for this. As long as the ground stays good to firm he should outrun his likely odds of around 16/1.

15:55 Cartmel – Railway Hurricane

Our final value bet of the day is arguably the most intriguing with Gavin Cromwell sending over three for today’s card and with two entered up here. His other runner, Western Runner, ran well here on Friday when staying on strongly over an extended three miles to get to within a head of Rapid Flight. It is obviously asking a lot of him to produce again 48 hours later, but he is gradually getting his act together over fences despite being 0-10 in this sphere.

His stable mate, RAILWAY HURRICANE, may just have the edge at the weights with 5lbs conditional Kieren Buckley on board. He has been dividing his time over hurdles and fences and you could argue that this 2m5f will stretch his stamina. However, his prominent run style will be well suited to this lay out of this track and if his young rider can get him into a good rhythm early on then he could have plenty of these in trouble form some way out. Handicap wise he a mark of 120 looks playable on the best of his hurdles form.
