13:45 – Byzantine Empire

BYZANTINE EMPIRE proved at least as good as ever when fourth on his most recent outing at Cheltenham, sticking to his task well to be beaten only five lengths. This represents a significant drop in grade and he is still only 5 lb higher in the weights today than when winning comfortably over this course and distance in December. Liam Harrison, who is good value for his 3 lb claim, also takes over in the saddle, so Byzantine Empire looks to have plenty going for him.

14:20 –  Miss Fairfax

MISS FAIRFAX made it back-to-back wins with an impressive display at Catterick three weeks ago, steadily drawing clear from the second last to land the spoils by 20 lengths. That was a fairly useful performance and she may yet have more to offer given how unexposed she is over staying trips. The testing conditions here won’t be an issue either and Miss Fairfax is fancied to take the step up in grade in her stride to complete the hat-trick.

14:55 – The Big Bite

THE BIG BITE has yet to run a bad race at Doncaster and his latest second over this course and distance was arguably his best effort yet, keeping on well to be beaten just a length behind the winner, Funambule Sivola. That rival gave the form a boost when following up on his next appearance in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury, and yet The Big Bite can line up here from an unchanged mark. He acts well on heavy going and another bold bid is expected.

15:30 – Cloth Cap

CLOTH CAP was a big improver last season, notably winning the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury and the Premier Chase at Kelso. Admittedly, he is yet to scale the same heights in three starts this season, but there have been plausible excuses each time and the handicapper is slowly starting to ease his grip. Now only 4 lb higher in the weights than when landing the Ladbrokes Trophy, Cloth Cap is well worth a chance to rediscover his best form in conditions he will relish.

16:05 – Imphal

IMPHAL showed improved form to resume winning ways at Wincanton six weeks ago, quickly asserting in the straight and ultimately passing the post with two and a quarter lengths to spare over his nearest rival. That was his fourth win from his last six starts, so he is clearly going the right way and a BHA mark of 117 still looks fair judged on the balance of his form. With cheekpieces also refitted, Imphal is taken to go in again for the Gary Moore yard which could hardly be in better form.

16:40 – Silver Flyer

SILVER FLYER has made a very promising start to his career over hurdles, getting off the mark at the first attempt at Catterick in December before running at least as well in defeat under a penalty when finding one too good at Carlisle last time. He jumped persistently left on the last occasion, so the return to a left-handed track today ought to play to his strengths. He is likely to progress further with that in mind and this looks a good opportunity for him to regain the winning thread.

17:15 – Pembroke

PEMBROKE is a half-brother to five winners, including Fighting Fit and Miss Night Owl, both of whom achieved a fairly useful level of form over jumps. Runner-up on his only completed start in Irish points, Pembroke clearly possesses his fair share of ability and he has since joined the Dan Skelton yard which is always worth following in bumpers. In a field made up mostly of newcomers, it will be interesting to see whether there are positive vibes for Pembroke in the betting.
