There was easily enough about last month’s Kelso comeback to suggest that the increasingly appealingly treated STONEY ROVER can double his hurdling tally back over the C&D of his 2018 novice win (soft). Shoughall’s Boy, like the selection ridden by Ryan Mania last time when holding on for victory here, can post a sound follow-up bid if settling better, and like Lady Bowes and Sophie Olivia numbers among a list of alternatives with something to recommend them on previous course exploits.
Cudgel clearly enjoys himself here and, with his good record when fresh, he should again be a leading player. Deep Charm is a potential improver after a promising chase debut and it would be no surprise to see him go close under topweight. He is feared most but the suggestion is to side with VERY PATIENT, who looks to have dropped to a workable mark and should be much better suited to this trip than the 1m7f he tackled here last time.
Point winner AAZZA made a winning rules debut over C&D (good to soft) last month and has strong follow-up claims under a penalty in this apparently weaker race. If she fails to handle today’s much more testing ground, hurdling newcomer Fist Pumping Time may be the one to pick up the pieces ahead of Cresswell Queen.
Having finished a close third in his sole point, SHAKA THE KING is open to improvement now tackling fences on his first run for Sandy Thomson, and this very lightly raced 7yo gets the nod ahead of Without Conviction who could appreciate the step up in trip on this second chase start. The consistent four-time course winner Graystown can give another good account, while the return to testing ground is a plus for Knocknamona.
Feivel and the mare Charm Offensive have shown promise over hurdles and can go well once more, but preference is for hurdling newcomer DEL LA MAR ROCKET who was impressive in a bumper at Exeter in January and had an excuse at Wetherby in March when found to be lame. Bak Rocky, Spike Jones and Thunder In Milan are open to improvement, but Feivel is feared most.

This looks likely to chiefly involve those higher in the handicap and topweight VENGEUR DE GUYE (nap) is taken to benefit from this drop in grade, with conditions likely to suit. Llantara goes well fresh and may prove next best, while Ettila De Sivola is much respected. An on-song Halcyon Days would also be competitive.
Victory for Askgarmor on just his third outing since March 2017 will rate a huge triumph of perseverance, but it would require a marked step up on anything he’s previously achieved on testing ground. Instead, ESPOIR MORIVIERE is trusted to take advantage of a 6lb lower mark than when just touched off over C&D a year ago, granted similarly heavy going for only the second time since. Another place finish for Atomic Angel would be nothing if not deserved.
