Plenty of depth to this with FAMOUS BRIDGE awarded the tentative vote. A promising third in an Irish bumper for Damian Murphy in the spring, on looks and pedigree he is sure to flourish over obstacles and has joined a very good yard in Nicky Richards. Brayhill must concede weight all round but is feared, along with Green Vault and Here Comes The Man.
Plenty of guesswork is required with this field, including on how Operation Overlord comes back from a second wind operation. He looks the most interesting of those who have run over hurdles but the hurdling newcomers may prove superior. PHIL DE PAIL, who stayed on well in his third bumper, gets the vote narrowly ahead of Hexham runner-up Release The Kraken, with Whelans Bridge, Gredin and Paddy The Horse all requiring a close look on their graduation from Irish points.
A fascinating race featuring several unexposed types whose form could go to the next level now they are switched to fences. Top of the list is BALLYBEGG, who won two novice hurdles early this year and reappears with his stable in excellent form. The unbeaten Dreams Of Home is second choice, although fellow chasing newcomers Killer Kane, Le Cheval Noir and Karl Philippe also bring potential.
The ones to concentrate on appear to be DONLADD, Honda Fifty and Wor Verge, all of whom have proved themselves at this track. The last named has run with credit recently but may well have to settle for further minor honours if the other two, who are far more lightly raced, return with all guns blazing from their summer breaks.
Kim Bailey won this last year with Imperial Aura and can land back-to-back runnings thanks to ESPOIR DE ROMAY, who wasn’t stopping in front when falling two out in the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree in April. Fellow second-season chasers Silver Hallmark and Fiddlerontheroof also possess strong form, and Grade 1 novice hurdle winner Ahoy Senor is an intriguing runner on his chase debut, but perhaps the main danger will come from the novice Pay The Piper who is the only runner with the benefit of a recent outing.
TOMMY’S OSCAR did a lot right when runner-up on reappearance at Wetherby and on that evidence, there’s a bigger performance in his locker. Captain Zebo defends an unbeaten Carlisle record and is feared given his record fresh, with Albert’s Back also of interest in a good-quality handicap.
Sandy Thomson does well with recruits from other yards and topweight HILL SIXTEEN gets the nod on his stable debut. With rain around this weekend, there can be optimism that conditions will be suitable for Eclair Mag, who ran well over C&D on heavy ground in February. He’s second choice although unexposed chasers Hold That Taught, Juge Et Parti and Who’s In The Box are others who could be in the mix.
Barrule Park is the fascinating one on pedigree, albeit likely to come into his own with time, and he looks the first string of Donald McCain. He needs a close look in the betting but there is less to take on trust with PRAIRIE WOLF who won in good style on his debut in May. Duke Of Deception, one of several with form in Irish points, was given a good mention by Oliver Greenall in his Stable Tour this month.
