Paul Nicholls’ runner Don Alvaro is open to considerable improvement if his summer wind op proves successful, while Dan Skelton’s unraced 4yo Turnaway is another that will need to be taken very seriously if strong in the betting. However, the tentative pick is BALLINTUBBER BOY, who displayed significant promise on his bumper debut in May. Don’t Stop Now has shown enough on his first two hurdling starts to interest each-way backers.
Another chance can be given to C&D winner Serjeant Painter, who would almost certainly have preferred a stronger pace when a beaten favourite at Exeter last week, but slight preference is for MASTERDREAM, who hasn’t been with Neil Mulholland long and comes here after running a big race in defeat at Newton Abbot last month. Dutch Admiral and Harry The Norseman are others to consider.
This might go to AL KHERB, who ran very well in defeat, despite being hampered on the home turn, when second in a C&D handicap in August. Fort De L’Ocean should also go well and is second choice.
Ex-French 4yo Shentri has been knocking on the door lately and can probably cope with a 2lb nudge up the weights for his recent Warwick second but ONE FORTY SEVEN, who won this race in 2018 and 2019, has slipped to an attractive mark and could be hard to beat if refreshed by a five-month break. Take Em Out and Romanor are others to consider.
Pillar Of Steel has already enjoyed a productive season and the form of her latest win has been very well advertised by the runner-up but one with more potential is WHISPERING GYPSY (nap), who rewarded strong market support when winning a Warwick novice last month and now makes her handicap debut. Crystal Gazing, another recent Warwick winner, might also have more to offer.
Most of these have plenty to prove but REBEL LEADER got off the mark over fences with a comfortable win at Perth last month and is open to more progress in this sphere. He gets the vote ahead of the other recent winner Mariners Moon, who scored in good style at Uttoxeter and is still unexposed at this sort of trip. Another to keep an eye on is dual Irish point winner Movethechains, who is very lightly raced under rules and looks interesting off a lowly mark on his handicap/stable debut.
A few of these are worth considering with SAMMEO getting the vote as he showed promise in bumper company and goes handicapping off a modest mark on his first start since a wind operation. If none the worse for his chasing experiences Genever Dragon might be biggest danger on his return to hurdles.
