Juddmonte International, Wednesday – Mishriff

The Juddmonte International at 3.35pm on Wednesday 18th of August lost a little gloss when long-time ante-post favourite St Mark’s Basilica was ruled out after suffering a setback, but his stablemate and five-time Group 1 winner Love is a more-than-capable substitute. She was one and three quarter lengths adrift of Mishriff in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last time, though, and he is taken to confirm that form.

He has been a real money spinner for connections this year, winning the Saudi Cup on dirt before showing his versatility by following up in the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan back on turf next time. Mishriff has since finished behind St Mark’s Basilica in the Eclipse at Sandown and Derby winner Adayar at Ascot, but neither of those rivals are in his way now and he can deservedly record a first domestic Group 1 win.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Lowther Stakes, Thursday – Illustrating

The Lowther Stakes betting market on Thursday is dominated by the unbeaten Sandrine and it is no surprise given that she took the step up to Group 2 company in her stride in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket last time. She confirmed her superiority over the placed fillies from the Albany, and won with a bit in hand, but this is set to be a stronger race and she may struggle to concede a 3 lb penalty to some equally progressive types.

One of those is Illustrating, who made a winning debut at Catterick in June but found the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot coming too soon on her next start. She showed improved form when resuming winning ways in a less-heated atmosphere at Goodwood last time, travelling notably well and showing a lethal turn of foot to lead over a furlong from home. There should be more to come from this well-bred filly, especially now tackling six furlongs for the first time, and she could offer some value.

Gimcrack Stakes, Friday – Lusail

Richard Hannon has three entries, two of which represent Al Shaqab Racing in Armor and Lusail, but the potent turn of foot the former showed when winning the Molecomb Stakes over five furlongs at Goodwood last time suggests he is unlikely to step up in trip.
Therefore, Lusail looks the one to side with following his narrow win in the July Stakes over this distance at Newmarket last time.

There was plenty to like about the way he went through the race, even if his success was a narrow one with little to spare, travelling well in a prominent position before being produced to lead under two furlongs out and showing a good attitude to hold off the runner-up when that rival came to challenge. That form received a boost when the second, Asymmetric, won the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood last time. Lusail made a winning debut over course and distance so all looks set for a big run.

Ebor Handicap, Saturday – Ilaraab

William Haggas always assembles a strong team for the Ebor meeting, but the Ebor itself has evaded him. However, he has two solid chances for this year’s renewal on Saturday in the shape of Hamish and Ilaraab, the former potentially well handicapped on his return from 14 months off and the latter a prolific winner before shaping better than the bare result in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last time.

He didn’t really get a chance to show what he is capable of on what was is first try in pattern company, those who were held up finding it hard to get involved and he was caught in a bit of traffic in the straight. Ilaraab looked tailormade for this race when powering home in a mile-and-a-half handicap at this track on his return in May, though, and will have no problem staying the extra two furlongs. He is now 9 lb higher in the weights, but looked very progressive before his run at Royal Ascot, and he looks a solid proposition.
