Horse Racing tips: Ruby Walsh’s super picks for Saturday’s ITV races

The former top jockey turned TV racing pundit knows all about big calls on the big days and makes a couple in the feature races at Ascot and York.

Ascot 13:50 – System

It looks a quite competitive race given the field size. System was good in Newmarket in June when he beat Desert Dreamer. Desert Dreamer reopposes here and they’re both first and second favourite. Do I see a way Desert Dreamer can turn the form around and beat System? I don’t. It’s on a similar track with slightly quicker ground but I’ll side with System.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Ascot 14:25 – Fantastic Fox

I like Fantastic Fox. The big field at Ascot didn’t suit him and he was far too keen. He was 12th of 14 that day. There’s just the seven runners here and the smaller field will suit him. There might not be as much competition for the pace up front too. Even if there is, there won’t be the same amount of horses clipping his heels. I’d give Fantastic Fox a chance.

York 14:40 – Gulliver

I thought Gulliver was quite disappointing at the Curragh last week as he’d had better runs than that. His run in this one can’t be as bad as his Curragh run behind Major Power. He’s back on home soil and he usually runs a consistent race.

Ascot 15:00 – Motakhayyel

It looked like Motakhayyel won at Newmarket earlier this month with more than three pounds in hand. It absolutely bolted in under Frankie Dettori! Could you oppose him? I don’t see how you can. Lord Rapscallion will run a good race and is a decent price which could also be an each-way shout.

York 15:15 – Mohaafeth

Jim Crowley has obviously gone to York to ride Mohaafeth but I find it just as interesting that Seamie Heffernan has gone to ride Armory. He could have gone to the King George to ride Broome, even though he’s an outsider. The jockey bookings would suggest that both William Haggas and Aidan O’Brien fancy their chances in this race. Juan Elcano was a good winner at Ascot after a wind operation and he travelled well in last year’s Guineas. Mohaafeth got there too soon at Ascot and that’s what made him look laboured. If his challenge was delayed until the straight he’d have looked as impressive as he did at Newmarket. I fancy Mohaafeth to beat Armory.

Ascot 15:35 – Love

This looks a cracking contest and price-wise Wonderful Tonight should be ahead of Lone Eagle in the market. She was very good when she beat Broome at Ascot. I’m a huge fan of Love and I’m going to side with her. I thought she might go to Goodwood next week but they’ve stepped her up to 1m 4f  here instead. We know she stays as she won the Epsom Oaks and she’ll be too good for the three-year -olds.

She has to give this year’s Epsom Derby winner Adayar 8lbs – but I still fancy her.

Ruby Walsh’s picks for Saturday’s races:

Ascot 13:50 – System
Ascot 14:25 – Fantastic Fox
York 14:40 – Gulliver
Ascot 15:00 – Motakhayyel
York 15:15 – Mohaafeth
Ascot 15:35 – Love
