Sir Mark Prescott’s well-bred gelding POLAR ICE didn’t live up to market expectations on his handicap debut at Chepstow but he still looked inexperienced and showed enough to suggest that he could click into gear with headgear added on this step up to 1m6f. He gets the vote ahead of Tinchoo, who caught the eye with her promising late headway over 1m2f last time. Another to consider is Largo Bay, who has finished runner-up in his last two starts and could be a big factor if his stamina holds out at this new trip.
Preference is for AL ASEF (nap), who produced a strong finish when scoring over C&D in May, is only 2lb higher today and has Tom Marquand booked. Front-runner Sir Rodneyredblood has had a highly productive time on AW this year and he’s feared most, though Puchita has finished placed over 7f here the last twice and is respected on her drop back in trip. The other one on the shortlist is dual C&D winner Water Of Leith, who looks interesting off a reduced mark on his return to Tapeta.
Monsaraz has a record of 2-3 at this track and he’s respected on his return to Tapeta, while Arabian King ran well for a long way behind a handicap blot at Chelmsford on his reappearance and looks interesting on this drop back in trip. However, the vote goes to COGITAL, who has been in good form back on the Flat in his two runs this season and still looks feasibly treated off 4lb higher than for his win at Doncaster last time.
A wide draw isn’t ideal for the often hard-pulling Prospect. With soft ground a valid reason for a poor effort at Lingfield last time, there’s scope for George Scott’s FINAL RENDEZVOUS to relish the return to Wolverhampton. She went close behind a subsequent winner here (8.5f) in May, and has few obvious shortcomings on the AW. Trevolli was a solid third at Newcastle last time.
Totally Charming showed clear promise with his 125-1 fourth at Nottingham last month and is a big player if he can build on that. Ian Williams has a couple of interesting contenders in Angels Landing and Chica Boom, while Hugo Palmer’s well-bred newcomer Queenie Newall needs a close look in the market. However, the one that appeals most is HALCYON SPIRIT, who left his debut form a long way behind when a close third at Windsor 15 days ago and is open to more progress on this step back up in trip.
Most of these have plenty to prove but the progressive KAYFAST WARRIOR is on a roll after his back-to-back wins on turf and he put in a dominant display from the front at Lingfield last week. He looks well treated under a penalty for that win and should take some stopping back on Tapeta in his hat-trick bid. The main danger is Major J, who got back on track with a close third in a big field at Chelmsford last Sunday and is on the same mark here.
