It’s a battle of the generations at Sandown Park on Saturday as four runners and riders go to post in the Eclipse Stakes.
You’ve come to the right place to swot up on the race as we’ve got the ultimate runner-by-runner guide.
Addeybb
Trainer: William Haggas Jockey: Tom Marquand Age: 7 Weight: 9st 7lbs
High-class gelding who arrives on back of Group 1 win at Randwick (1m2f) in April. Blinkers worn there are replaced by usual cheekpieces and he’s firmly in the picture with ground conditions to suit.
Mishriff
Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: David Egan Age: 4 Weight: 9st 7lbs
Has resumed better than ever this spring and he made it 2-2 in Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan (12f). Equally as effective at this shorter trip, and this top-class colt looks the one to beat.
El Drama
Trainer: Roger Varian Jockey: Andrea Atzeni Age: 3 Weight: 8st 11lbs
Very useful colt who landed Chester’s Dee Stakes in May but well held in Prix du Jockey Club behind St Mark’s Basilica at Chantilly last time. Has plenty on his plate here.
St Mark’s Basilica
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 3 Weight: 8st 11lbs
Has made into a high-class colt in 2021 and impressive scorer of Poule d’Essai des Poulains at Longchamp and Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, showing a really good turn of foot each time. Player.
Timeform Verdict
Only four runners but still a fascinating Eclipse. MISHRIFF showed himself to be a top-class colt when scoring cosily in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic in March and he can cement his placing among Europe’s best middle-distance performers by ending the winning run of Aidan O’Brien’s Prix du Jockey Club hero St Mark’s Basilica. Addeybb shouldn’t be underestimated and he can also have a say.
