Ryan McCue stood in for Frank Hickey on a special edition of From The Horse’s Mouth to preview all the action at the York Races Ebor Festival this week.
You can listen to the podcast in full below and we’ve outlined Ryan’s selections for day three here.
Enbihaar won well at Goodwood last time on good-to-firm ground. The ground is probably going to softer than the last day.
She was beaten on soft ground earlier this season and at the back end of last season, so she probably performs better on better ground. She may be opposable and the one I’ll oppose with is Eagles By Day.
He’s moved from Michael Bell’s to David O’Meara’s this season. He’s had two runs for David O’Meara, winning at York over course and distance, beating Communique on his first start for the yard. That was a really good display.
I don’t think he was too fancied that day. He went off 14/1 and was a bit of a drifter. But he came out and ran a really credible race in the Goodwood Cup which was a messy race and turned into a bit of a sprint, but he showed good sectionals between the two and three poles to close down the horses in front of him and was only beaten five lengths in the end.
I thought that was a really good run and shows that he’s still improving. There’s a couple of pounds to find with the likes of Nayef Road and Enbihaar and a couple of lengths to make up too, but the fact he’s a course and distance winner will stand for a lot at York. I’d put up Eagles By Day as my selection.
Battaashis probably at around the right price and, for me, it’s hard to see past him. He obviously broke his own course record at Goodwood last time, he was beaten in this race a couple of season ago, but I think the no crowd factor definitely is a player here.
He hasn’t shown any of his quirks this season. He won his two races in really good style so it’s hard to take him on really.
I know there’s a fresh line of form coming in here with Art Power and A’Ali. Art Power is an improving sprinter, but this is a different kettle of fish. He only gets 2lb on Battaash and I don’t think that’s enough.
