Mohaather showed determination, skill and speed to take the Sussex Stakes from a not-so encouraging position at the death in a thrilling finish from Circus Maximus and SP favourite Siskin.
That was the standout moment on another excellent day’s racing in sunny West Sussex, so join us as we recap Wednesday’s full results at Glorious Goodwood 2020.
Chamade made a mockery of its 22/1 SP with a dominant display in the day’s opener. She led strongly from the front and opened up a lead over the favourite Waliyak towards the close. Dean Street Doll ran well to take third at 14/1.
Rochester House ran a very brave race, doing all the running round this 2m4f trip, but Just Hubert, at a 25/1 SP, and Tom Marquand timed their attack to perfection, just pipping Rochester House at the line after going 1 furlong out. Smart Champion led a close-run pack home in third ahead of The Grand Visir.
Mambo Nights dug deep to hold off a strong challenge from A Star Above to take the win. Again it was the front runner who stayed on to finish strongly. Sound Of Cannons ran a handy race in third at 22/1 with Encipher in fourth.
Steel Bull showed a lovely turn of foot at exactly the right time, reeling in Ben Macudi inside the final 1/2 furlong after finding the space he needed to make the favourite-backers happy. Internationaldream picked up a very handy third at 50/1 ahead of Chief Little Hawk in fourth.
Mohaather pounced late round the outside of Siskin and Circus Maximus with a perfectly timed move to take the Sussex Stakes by half a length. Kameko was boxed in and never got the clean run he wanted while Siskin never looked fully settled.
But, ultimately, Circus Maximus couldn’t resist Mohaather’s afterburners and it was all about the latter, winning the hard way from an SP of 3/1 from Circus Maximus, Siskin and Kameko.
Miss Jingles and Country Carnival got physical inside the final furlong-and-a-half here, bumping into each other as the latter looked for room. But it was Miss Jingles who had the last laugh, striding forward to beat Country Carnival into second with Spright a fair way back in this 5 furlong sprint.
Oisin Murphy was able to soften the blow of his disappointment on Kameko in the Sussex Stakes with a win on Toro Strike in the final race of day 2 of Glorious Goodwood. The three-year-old and was nicely placed coming round the bend, allowing the American raider to power home from Magical Wish, Deep Intrigue, Zhui Feng and Mottrib who finished in that order.
