Glorious Goodwood got off to a stunner with another amazing performance from Frankie Dettori and Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup. John Gosden’s superstar claimed the crown for the fourth year in a row in some style despite a very unpromising position a few furlongs out.
Battleground was the other one to catch the eye as he continued to show promise with a good win in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes. Here’s how day one panned out.

13:10 British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap (1.10pm) – Tomorrow’s Dream
A hotly contested opener to Glorious Goodwood 2020 was taken by Timeform and Paddy Power pick Tomorrow’s Dream and Tom Marquand who had just enough to push forward around 1 furlong out, holding off the challenge of Angel Power, Queen Silca and Hateya who were only separated by a photo finish.
13:45 – Unibet You’re On Handicap 1m2f (1.45pm)- Maydanny
Maydanny led pretty much from the start and kicked two furlongs out to cap a very impressive performance with a gradual acceleration away from the rest of the field. Sky Defender was the next best, pipping Bell Rock by the smallest of margins and they were followed home by Derevo who was the best of the rest in a close-run race from second backwards.
14:15 – Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes 7f (2.15pm) – Battleground
The highly-rated and well bred Battleground showed his pedigree and proved too strong for Devious Company in the final couple of furlongs as the pair broke from the pack and the latter just eased away to take glory. Youth Spirit was some way back in third with Gorytus following him home in fourth.
14:45 – Qatar Lennox Stakes 7f (2.45pm) – Space Blues
Space Blues lived up to his favourite tag, easing round the outside to nip out in front and keep moving away from the rest who had no response to his speed down the hill. Duke of Hazzard was second and the 40/1 SP Escobar landed a handy third with Safe Voyage in fourth.
15:15 – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes 2m (3.15pm) – Stradivarius
Stradivarius showed his class to pull it out of the bag and take his fourth successive Goodwood Cup in dramatic style. He conceded 15lb to Santiago and had a poor spot on the inside rail but the young pretender had no answer to Frankie Dettori and Stradivarius who surged home after manoeuvring onto the outside to take it in thrilling fashion. Nayef Road was second best ahead of Santiago and Eagles By Day in fourth.
15:45 – Qatar Handicap 5f (3.45pm) – Only Spoofing
This was one for the outsiders with neither of the fancied joint favourites threatening to win at any point. Acclaim The Nation headed the field for much of the race but just faded to let 14/1 SP Only Spoofing pass late on. A momentofmadness was third at 22/1 with Benny And The Jets in fourth.
16:20 – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes 6f (4.20pm) – Alkumait
Alkumait looked in control and clearly demonstrated he was a step above his rivals here under Jim Crowley. Talking a wide line, the favourite cut round the outside before hitting the front and cruising home ahead of Tawleed and two 66/1 starters in third and fourth in the shape of The Princes Poet and Danzart.
16:55 – British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap 1m4f (4.55pm) – Believe In Love
Believe In Love shocked more fancied runners to take the closer on day 1 of Glorious Goodwood 2020. Asiaaf was next home, ahead of Dancing Approach while Tulip Fields, the 10/3 SP fav disappointed in fourth.
