Frank Hickey has shed some light on Sunday’s action at Navan, picking out three top tips from an exciting card at the County Meath course.
Speaking on the latest episode of Paddy Power’s From The Horse’s Mouth podcast, our expert trader also selected one to keep an eye on at Exeter.
12.10pm, Navan – Farouk Dalene
I would not disagree with Ruby Walsh at all when he says FAROUK DALENE will win this. Gordon Elliott has won this race five times with the likes of Death Duty, Samcro and Fury Road. Farouk Dalene was closely matched with Fire Attack in a bumper run last year, but Fire Attack hasn’t had the benefit of a run recently while Farouk Dalene has.
12.33pm, Exeter – L’Air Du Vent
One to keep an eye on – I’m not sure if it would be a bet though – is L’AIR DU VENT in the 3 mile Novice Chase. I think this horse is going to win a really nice handicap this year over fences and showed a bit of promise last year over hurdles, particularly at Cheltenham. However, he was way too keen to do himself justice. He ran really well on chase debut at Chepstow behind The Wolf. At the time, Colin Tizzard’s horses were running below form so for him to do so well was a point to him. I think he will improve from the run, and maybe he won’t win on Sunday but there is definitely a nice handicap in this horse.
2.20pm, Navan – Minella Indo
MINELLA INDO was obviously a really good novice last year, but I was really taken with the way he won at Wexford. It was Wexford and it was only a four-runner race, but he absolutely destroyed Milan Native, who won the Kim Muir last year, He jumped brilliantly and Henry De Bromhead said he improved massively for the run so I’d be very disappointed if he gets beaten. He looks a proper Gold Cup contender.
3.30pm, Navan – Mare Quimby
I’m going to take a chance on MARE QUIMBY. I think she’ll be a little bit of a price and I really like the name of the horse as well – I think that’s really good! This horse ran at Punchestown last month and attracted real support that day, backed from 12s to about 13/2. She won very nicely. Royal Kahala, that finished behind Castra Vetera in March, was well-beaten and she’s come out and won a bumper and a maiden hurdle very impressively since.
