Cheltenham tips: Sunday’s best bets on day three of the November meet

The Cheltenham November Meeting sponsored by Paddy Power comes to a conclusion on Sunday, and we pulled together an expert panel to preview the final day of action at Prestbury Park.

From The Horse’s Mouth podcast host Tom Nugent was joined by trainer Emma Lavelle, legendary jockeys Ruby Walsh and Mick Fitzgerald and the main man Paddy to dissect Sunday’s card.

1.50pm

Paddy – Discorama: “DISCORAMA for me – why not?! His finishes at Cheltenham are 3-2-2 so you could say he deserves one. He normally runs at the festival and will obviously see out the trip. He loves the track and Paul Nolan’s horses are going well.”

Emma – Discorama: “I have to stick with DISCORAMA. Andrew Gemmell owns half of him and it would be very disloyal if I went anywhere else. With Paddy also giving sound advice on that, I will say the same!”

Mick – Discorama: “I was all over DISCORAMA when he finished behind The Conditional in the Ultima Handicap Chase and he’s only 2lbs higher. He ran a belter at Galway behind Milan Native and that’s good form so a horse with strong form around Cheltenham has to be respected. The other one I think could run a big race here is Beware The Bear. If he gets loose on the front end, look out.”

Ruby – Cloth Cap: “I like CLOTH CAP and think he ran really well behind Frodon the last day. I know West Approach was also in front of him but Richie McLernon rides for Jonjo O’Neill and he would be my choice here.”

2.25pm

Mick – Defi Du Seuil: “Rouge Vif was super impressive winning a handicap here off a lofty mark, so he sets a good standard and will help set the race up. But every time you think DEFI DU SEUIL is not going to win, he wins. You cannot underestimate him, and the only poor run he had last season happened to be on the big day. I want to see good horses winning big races and hope to see him bounce back in style.”

Emma: “This is such a great race on paper so I hope they all turn up and bring their A game to Cheltenham for the day. I want to sit back, watch and see how the novices compare to the seasoned campaigners. They’re all lovely, lovely horses.”

Ruby – Defi Du Seuil: “I didn’t fancy Put The Kettle On this time last year in the Novices’ Chase and I thought she had no chance in the Arkle, then she went and won the two of those. So I’m going to reserve judgement on her, and wish her connections all the best, but I think the class horse is the top horse – DEFI DU SEUIL. Rouge Vif was very impressive here in October but if you sent Defi Du Seuil to the start off a rating of 156 in a handicap he would come back up equally as impressively. He did everything right last year until he got to Cheltenham for the festival”

Paddy – Put The Kettle On: “I’m going for PUT THE KETTLE ON after two from two at Cheltenham. I haven’t backed her either time, so I’m probably going to stop her run now by betting on her, but I think she’s better than we all expect and sometimes we don’t give credit to horses when they win at big prices unexpectedly. She is just very good and very straightforward, jumping from fence to fence and she’ll be a pleasure to watch.”

Mick – Hunters Call: “HUNTERS CALL might be a 10-year-old but has very little mileage on the clock. He finished fourth at Galway last time out and made the running that day, which is not how he likes to be ridden. Off his mark, he’s dangerous and is a very good each-way bet.”

Paddy – Thyme White: “Ballyandy was second to Sceau Royal last time and that has been franked in spectacular style. I don’t think he’s going to win, but he will be in the mixup as he’s a brave horse with great Cheltenham form. The one that is standing out to me is THYME WHITE for Paul Nicholls. He won as easily as you like at Chepstow last time and looked like he had any amount in hand.”

Ruby – Harambe: “I’m going for last year’s winner HARAMBE. He came from well off the pace to win under Tom Bellamy and has only run once since when he got brought down in the Betfair Hurdle while still in contention. He’s only 6lbs higher and I think he’s favourably treated.”

3.35pm

Ruby – Third Time Lucki: “THIRD TIME LUCKI has done nothing wrong. He’s two from two this season having finished fourth in the Cheltenham Bumper behind Ferny Hollow. Has he achieved much in those two wins? Not really, but what can any horse do but win the races they’re in. There’s a slight question mark over the place form of the Cheltenham Bumper. I’m struggling to pick a winner but I will certainly be watching Third Time Lucki with an eye on Ferny Hollow and Appreciate It’s form.”

Emma – Third Time Lucki: “I think Ruby has been quite harsh on the form of THIRD TIME LUCKI. The horse that he beat at Uttoxeter has come out and won well since then and I think he is properly decent. He’s where I will be looking in this race.”

Mick – Courtandbould: “The jury is out on Third Time Lucki. I’ve done the time comparisons with other horses that have won at Wetherby and he couldn’t have done any more than win – it’s not that impressive for a horse that has a lot of natural speed, and he didn’t jump that brilliant either. I think COURTANDBOULD, who has been a little bit of a star this year for his owners, loves a bit of good ground so if it stays half-decent he will give a really good run.”

Paddy – For Pleasure: “I’m going to go for FOR PLEASURE, for Alex Hales and Harry Bannister. This horse looks really progressive but ran really weird at Kempton the last time, finishing fourth as he ran all over the shop. That’s not a good reason to back it but I just think that if that gets corrected, he can get back on the progressive streak it was on.”

Ruby – Weseekhimhere: “WESEEKHIMHERE could be an interesting runner here, if he shows up. Gordon Elliott has sent over Tiger Roll so maybe he will send a horse for the bumper as well. He beat Camp David in Listowel, which was a good enough run, and then Mighty Meggsie in Galway.”
