Oisin Murphy makes his long-awaited return to the saddle under the lights at Chelmsford on Thursday.
The three-time champion jockey is booked to ride Jupiter Express, trained by Mick Appleby, in the Class 5 Winning Connections Networking Handicap (6pm). It is his only ride of the evening.
Murphy has been on the sidelines for the last 14 months after being banned for alcohol and Covid-19 breaches.
The 27-year-old has a decent strike rate on Appleby’s horses, having notched 16 winners from 70 rides.
“It’s great that we’re able to give him his first ride back,” Appleby said. “Obviously he’s done what he’s done but hopefully he’s learnt his lesson now. He’s still a very good jockey and I’ll be supporting him as much as I can.
“He’s had plenty of winners for us in the past, he’s one of the top jockeys. I’m sure he’ll be back riding winners.”
Timeform verdict on Jupiter Express: Winner at Wolverhampton in January. 5/4, quickly back to form when second of 8 in handicap at the same course (6.1f) 29 days ago. Can resume winning ways with more to offer for his current connections.
Murphy, who has ridden nearly 1,200 winners in Britain, will be bidding to regain the Flat Jockeys Championship this year.
The 2023 title will be decided on winners in turf and all-weather races between Saturday, May 6 and Saturday, October 21.
