Willie Mullins has the leading contender for Saturday’s Ladbrokes Trophy after 22 horses went forward at the five-day confirmation stage.
Ontheropes broke his maiden status over fences when landing last month’s Munster National and is the antepost favourite with Paddy Power for Saturday’s lucrative Grade 3 handicap at Newbury.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Mullins, who saddled Total Recall to glory in the 2017 edition of the Ladbrokes Trophy, also has Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase champ Brahma Bull and Annamix as potential runners.
Henry de Bromhead boasts a strong hand as the Knockeen handler has M.W. Hickey Memorial Chase winner Eklat De Rire and top weight Chris’s Dream on the entry list. De Bromhead will be hoping to make it quick-fire successes in the UK after landing the Betfair Chase with A Plus Tard last weekend.
Cloth Cap was successful in last year’s renewal – inflicting a 10l defeat on Aye Right – but Jonjo O’Neill’s charge is rated 18lbs higher this time around. The defending champion, who underwent wind surgery after pulling up in April’s Grand National, blew off the cobwebs on his seasonal reappearance at Cheltenham last month.
The only other course-and-distance winner is Copperhead and Colin Tizard’s charge is dropping down the handicap after three disappointing chase runs on the spin before switching back to hurdles last term.
Another of Tizzard’s other potential runners, Fiddlerontheroof, is prominent in our antepost betting market after a winning start to the season, while Paul Nicholls’ top hope Enrilo can also be backed at a single-digit price.
The youngest horse among the entries, Kitty’s Light, has hit the post on two runs this term and is lightly treated in the weights. The final declarations for the Ladbrokes Trophy 2021 will be revealed on Thursday morning.
