The five-day declarations for the Paddy Power Gold Cup are in – and we’ve got two great geldings at the top of our antepost betting market for Saturday’s big race at Cheltenham.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
LALOR has failed to finish on his last two starts but comes alive at Cheltenham having secured a win, a second and two third-place finishes in five career appearances. He has been transferred to Paul Nicholls since his last run and the Ditcheat yard is bang in form of late.
PROTEKTORAT, who will carry 5lb more than his rival, also makes his first appearance of the campaign but has been prepped for the race by trainer Dan Skelton since returning from a summer break. The six-year-old – a course and distance winner – was last seen romping to glory in April’s Manifesto Novices’ Chase at Aintree.
AL DANCER is hot on their heels in our market and the history books indicate that the eight-year-old runs well fresh having won on his first starts of the season in 2018, 2019 and 2020. He is also set to make his maiden appearance for a new yard after being moved to Sam Thomas’ stables last month.
Nicky Henderson’s leading contender, according to our traders, is CARIBEAN BOY, who finished behind the likes of The Shunter and Farclas in the Paddy Power Plate at this year’s Cheltenham Festival.
A glance down the weights and GALAHAD QUEST sticks out as one to note after an encouraging third-place finish on his seasonal reappearance in last month’s Listed handicap chase at Wetherby. Trainer Nick Williams needs at least one entrant higher in the weights to withdraw before final declarations, however.
ASSEMBLE has already won one big handicap since returning to the track when claiming the Kerry National at Listowel and Joseph O’Brien’s charge has been handed top weight.
Elsewhere, last year’s winner COOLE CODY is set to run off a 4lb higher mark in this season’s renewal but the veteran handicapper has not won since.
2020 Cheltenham Festival winner SIMPLY THE BETTS has not run since finishing sixth in the 2020 Paddy Power Gold Cup but will have Bryony Frost in the saddle.
