Adayar will attempt to join an elite club of Epsom Derby winners that doubled up in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday October 3.
The Frankel colt was a 16/1 winner of the English Classic in June after a late gamble on the day from 40/1 before confirming his class by beating the likes of Mishriff, Love and Broome in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot the following month.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
A leg infection forced Adayar to miss the Prix Niel – a key Arc trial over course and distance – earlier this month but he remains a hot fancy to win the most prestigious prize in Europe.
We’ve taken a look at the previous five Epsom Derby winners that ran in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe to see how Adayar’s predecessors fared.
Harzand – 2016
The Dermot Weld-trained Harzand won the Epsom Derby on his fourth career start before doubling up in the Irish equivalent three weeks later.
The son of Sea The Stars flopped in the Irish Champion Stakes after a near three-month break and failed to fire in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe finishing ninth of 16 runners on what proved to be his final racecourse appearance.
Golden Horn – 2015
The ultra-consistent Golden Horn never finished outside the top two in nine career starts, winning nearly £4m in prize money during a glittering three-year-old campaign.
After a 3½l victory in the Epsom Derby, John Gosden’s charge added the Eclipse Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes to his CV before a 2l success in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Ruler Of The World – 2013
Ruler Of The World made it three wins from three when claiming the Epsom Derby but suffered back-to-back defeats – including the Prix Niel – before heading to Longchamp for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
The son of Galileo stayed on for seventh on soft ground before signing off his three-year-old campaign by placing third in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.
Camelot – 2012
Camelot won the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and Irish equivalent in the space of two months before a ¾l defeat to Encke in the St Leger when attempting to become first horse since Nijinsky in 1970 to complete the Triple Crown.
The exertions at Doncaster perhaps took its toll as Aidan O’Brien’s charge delivered the worst result of his career in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe finishing 12½l behind Solemia in seventh.
Workforce – 2010
Workforce, quite frankly, delivered when it mattered most in his Classic campaign, winning the Epsom Derby in a record time before shrugging off a flop in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes to beat Nakayama Festa by a head for Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe glory.
After three less-than-thrilling performances at the age of four, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained horse returned to Longchamp to defend his Arc title but was retired to stud after coming home in 12th.
