Irish Champion Stakes: St Mark’s Basilica heads Paddy’s antepost market

The Irish Champion Stakes is just around the corner and the Leopardstown Group 1 contest is shaping up to be an absolute blockbuster.

ST MARK’S BASILICA heads Paddy Power’s antepost betting despite injury forcing the dual French Classic winner to miss the Juddmonte International Stakes at last week’s Ebor Festival. Aidan O’Brien confirmed his superstar three-year-old would be trained for the Irish Champion Stakes if he recovers as expected.

The biggest threat, according to our market, looks set to be TARNAWA, who is unbeaten since October 2019. Dermot Weld’s mare rounded off her four-year-old campaign by claiming the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland and started this season with a comfortable win in the Ballyroan Stakes earlier this month.

A total of 33 horses are entered for the Irish Champion Stakes including St James’s Palace Stakes winner POETIC FLARE, Juddmonte International champ MISHRIFF and last year’s dual Classic winning-filly LOVE.

SNOWFALL and WONDERFUL TONIGHT also hold entries although both fillies are being primed for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October.

The Irish Champion Stakes is the feature race on the first day of the Irish Champions Weekend on Saturday September 11. On the same day, the last of the English Classics takes place at Doncaster – and Hurricane Lane is odds-on favourite in Paddy Power’s antepost betting for the St Leger.
