Where’s Jeff is still feasibly treated but this looks a more competitive event than the Hamilton handicap he won last week. Cozone should be on the premises but FIREWATER ended 2020 in good form, has conditions to suit and can go well fresh. He could be worth chancing after his seven-month absence.
Only two of the runners have experience and WILD BEAUTY is the better option. Magnolia State is feared most among the debutantes, with Asaayil second choice. The betting should help to firm up the pecking order.
Last Empire can confirm Nottingham placings with Ventura Diamond and she’s a strong candidate with conditions likely to make this a thorough test. DANDALLA will appreciate the return to 6f though and she escapes a penalty for her two Group-race wins last season. She handles soft ground and is marginally preferred. The fly in the ointment is Twilight Spinner, who faces a huge rise in class but who has pretentions to being smart.
Pink Storm has the best form but her pedigree doesn’t suggest she’ll need such a test at this stage of her career. There should be no concerns on the stamina front for Augmentarium, Lady Valentine or Madame Ambassador and all three are respected but perhaps MEZZANOTTE could be the answer. She’s bred to be useful, is unlikely to want for stamina and her trainer got off the mark for the month on Tuesday.
This looks a minefield with the bulk of the field open to plenty of improvement and racing on ground that is likely to be slower than they have previously tackled. Barshaa and Strawberri are more appealing than most but SIYATA could leave her Newbury debut behind her now upped in distance. Flaunt is a newcomer who is well worth a second look too.

Ford Madox Brown and Arctic Emperor move into handicaps with untapped potential and both make the shortlist but HOODWINKER may be the answer. William Haggas’s filly had to tough it out when a red-hot favourite at Wolverhampton last time but she should have learned a fair bit from that experience and she looked promising on slow ground on her first two starts. There is a question mark over Storm Dreamer on soft ground but he has a lot more ability than his form figures would indicate.
Wink Of An Eye made up plenty of ground in the closing stages to take second on his handicap debut at Goodwood and he’s greatly respected with the slower ground unlikely to bother him. The Bravest and Dr T J Eckleburg can have a case argued but DOWNSMAN (nap) may be the answer. He carried his head awkwardly in the closing stages when second at Salisbury last week but it was the first time he’d been in serious contention and perhaps it was still greenness. That represented a significant improvement from him and he should be fine over this shorter trip, especially if the rain arrives. He can take this before his revised mark comes into force at the weekend.
