Ruby Walsh and Frank Hickey have picked out their best bets ahead of a weekend which sees the beginning of the Flat season proper as well as a sprinkling of Jumps meetings.
Speaking on the latest episode of Paddy Power’s From The Horse’s Mouth podcast, our dynamic duo have picked out tips at Doncaster and Limerick for their most solid selections.
This is a good opportunity for YUKON LIL, rather than a decision to go back hurdling after chasing. She had a really good run behind Elimay and Shattered Love at Naas on her last start, although prior to that she was pulled up over 2½m at Thurles.
2m seems to be her forte, and she beat Scarlet And Dove in a beginners’ chase at Cork first time up over fences, and she’s a wonderful jumper. Felicidad is the highest rated of the opposition – she’s 122 – and I would expect Yukon Lil is definitely a 130 mare, if not more than that. I think Yukon Lil will win and she is my NAP of the weekend.

There is always a bit of guesswork at this time of the year, trying to work out which stables are in form, but the one I’ve come down on is JUAN ELCANO for Kevin Ryan. He was a very useful two-year-old, beating Subjectivist on debut and finishing a close second in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes and Group 2 Champagne Stakes.
He was only beaten 4l in last year’s 2,000 Guineas when fifth, and stepped up to 10f for his next two starts. He was fourth in the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot when only 7/2, but didn’t really seem to get home that day. He definitely didn’t get 1½m in the Voltigeur at York, but the Kevin Ryan yard are in decent form at the moment and Juan Elcano has been gelded since last season. The drop back down to 1m will suit and Andrea Atzeni on board is always a positive around Doncaster too.
