We have flat action from Doncaster on ITV this weekend, plus some jumping action coming from Newbury where the highlight is the Mares’ final. I have picked a fab foursome for you from across the meetings and I will kick-off at the South Yorkshire track.
MONTATHAM will be one of the favourites here and for good reason. This gelding rattled through the handicap ranks last year winning at Newmarket and then backing up with a very close second in the Royal Hunt Cup last June.
He won a big handicap at the Ebor meeting at York and has to be on the shortlist. Juan Elcano is the interesting one after being gelded in the winter. He promised lots, but delivered very little last season. He finished fifth in the 2,000 Guineas but has struggled since that race.
The favourite should be Good Ball trained by Paul Nicholls and this horse is owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, Ged Mason and the Hales family. He won very nicely at the track in a race that as worked out very well since, he was in receipt of weight that day being a three-year-old and as a four-year-old now, he also receives 8lbs from his older rivals.
He was a little disappointing at the track in February when getting beaten and fading tamely. He is better than that, so Nicholls will be hoping he can bounce back here. SOMETIMES ALWAYS has been struggling on bad ground all season. He has won a couple, but being by Presenting he will love this drying ground. His trainer continues in good form and at the prices is a really lively each-way prospect.
The Lincoln is the first big target for Flat trainers and Richard Hughes has had this race in mind all winter for the son of Camelot BRENTFORD HOPE. He has been working nicely and having not ridden the winner of this race when he was riding, Hughes would love to win it as a trainer. Brentford Hope is well drawn in Stall 16 as the last 4 winners came from 17, 10, 20 and 22. Kynren has been placed in the race before and could be interesting as an each-way alternative.
Marada was the one I was very keen on here, but I just worry about the trip with her as all her runs have been over 2m and I just worry that she may be a little free over this extra trip. Rose Of Arcadia carries the colours of Cheveley Park stud, they had a fantastic Cheltenham and this daughter of Arcadio won nicely at Wincanton. With the Colin Tizzard’s horses in much better form she has to enter calculations.
Nicky Henderson has four runners and the stable jockey Nico de Boinville has chosen Lilly Pedlar. She has run some nice races in defeat and could be reasonably handicapped. Kilmington Rose is another by Presenting who will be happier on this better ground too.
The one I have gone for is MISTY WHISKY though. She has disappointed with her jumping on several occasions, but ran a really nice race under Lorcan Murtagh at Kempton in a handicap hurdle. If she can jump well, her bumper form is really strong and she could be very well handicapped off her mark.
