The Harry Whittington stable has an excellent record when sending horses to Sedgefield with a 43% strike-rate with runners over hurdles in the past five-seasons. DARGIANNINI can return to winning ways in the opening 2m 4f novices’ hurdle having been turned over at odds-on at Aintree in early December.
The six-year-old returns to this venue having easily won a bumper on debut last October, with the second, third and fifth-placed horses all subsequent winners. Malpas is the obvious danger for Donald McCain and Brian Hughes, but it’s hard to see beyond the favourite thanks to the recent good form Hill Barn team.
Lady Of The Night is a horse trained by Kim Bailey and despite not running here is an interesting marker with form lines tied in with both Coquelicot and JUNIPER. Anthony Honeyball’s runner returns having finished third and just behind Lady Of The Night at Exeter before Christmas and a recent wind-operation could see her improve to finally win over hurdles. However, I’m happy to side with another Harry Whittington trained runner which will hopefully see the yard land a nice double.
JUNIPER is a lightly raced mare who returns quickly having finished second here over a furlong further 10-days ago. It’s only her second start for the Hill Barn team having raced just once under rules at Ballinrobe in Ireland under the care of Pat Doyle. The daughter of Malinas will surely improve with both the small drop in trip and drying ground looking positives towards her chances of scoring under Daryl Jacob.

QUID PRO QUO went straight into my notebook following a nice winning debut at Hereford last November and can hopefully score again for Dan Skelton and JP McManus today. The son of Beat Hollow was green on debut but travelled smoothly and found plenty to see of a late challenge of Shearer. The Paul Nicholls trained second, along with the third, sixth and seventh placed finishers have all enhanced the form with subsequent victories in recent months.
The Ben Pauling trained I’m Spellbound could improve for a debut fourth at Southwell, while Hanafy and Season In The Sun are also on the shortlist. Elsewhere, Red Hot Radish looks an interesting runner for James Fanshawe and any market support should be noted. Pitch It Up and Braganza Bay are two newcomers who also warrant attention in the betting for both Emma Lavelle and Henry Daly on debut.
