It is tempting to concentrate on last-time scorers On The Right Track and Beat The Breeze, the former 1-1 over 1m4f and the latter beaten by the pace bias rather than stamina on his only attempt at the trip. The eye is however drawn to KING ATHELSTAN, drawn even better than when winning an identical 16-runner C&D event last December and by no means impossibly handicapped. Double Legend has more in his favour than on his recent stable debut and can get among the places.

12:00 Yes My Boy

Last week’s C&D winner YES MY BOY looks a solid bet to follow up under a 6lb penalty. He has a good record on the AW and is open to plenty of further progress. Make It Rain is the other improver in the line-up and should pose the biggest threat. Furzig might prove best of the rest.

12:35 Abstinence

Although Mystical Air should come on for her debut run at Newcastle, she looks vulnerable to one of the newcomers and the one who makes most appeal is ABSTINENCE. The Lope De Vega filly hails from a yard which has been firing in the winners and she may be good enough to make a successful start to her racing career. Eastern Dawn, Monjazaat, Secret Shadow and Wannabe Safe are other interesting debutantes.

13:05 Lochnaver

Representing strong connections, Haizoom and Serena’s Queen look interesting newcomers for whom a market check is advised, but Ocean Road and LOCHNAVER boast good form and the last named, a strong finisher over 7f last time, is preferred. Zooma is another to consider.

13:40 Fox Duty Free

The three to focus on may be topweight Ejtilaab, the progressive Alminoor and last month’s C&D winner FOX DUTY FREE. The selection overcame his previous indifferent behaviour to land a gamble last time and there is a good chance he has plenty more to offer despite his rise in the weights.

14:10 Nurse Dee

Better can be expected from Desert Boots this time but Arthur’s Angel and NURSE DEE are turned out quickly after finishing first and third at Chelmsford on Friday and may fight out the finish. The winner did it nicely that day but the last named has a 6lb pull for a 2l beating and has received a much better draw this time. She may be able to turn the tables.

14:45 Mamillius (NAP)

There will probably be plenty of market confidence behind Gumra in her bid for a four-timer but she races off a career-high mark and has to prove she is effective at this track. It may well prove best to take her on with MAMILLIUS (nap), who is well handicapped and has a good record fresh. This may well be the time to catch him, after a break. Blame Culture looks best of the rest.

15:20 Rochester House

Monjeni is 2-2 here and a tempting option having returned to form with a good fourth at Newcastle last time, but ROCHESTER HOUSE is too well treated to ignore off an AW mark 5lb lower than when winning at Ascot last month. He was tailed off last autumn on his two encounters with Polytrack but was also well beaten on turf the time before, suggesting he was just badly out of form at the time.
