Irish Greyhound Derby tips: Best bets for Saturday’s final at Shelbourne Park

Sky Sports Darrell Williams' mark your card for the biggest event in the Irish Greyhound racing season.

It’s the Irish Derby final night on Saturday and what a race we have in store on a packed card at Shelbourne Park. We’ve focused on Darrell’s best picks of the night and the big finals in our preview below.

9.24pm: Irish Greyhound Derby Final

You can make cases for just about every runner in this Derby final. The pace angle is interesting because it’s inside and outside. The two stronger runners are right down the middle.

I didn’t fancy Music Glideaway on Saturday but the race worked out perfectly for her. You have to respect that Pat Guilfoyle’s greyhound did step up on that run and is coming to peak form at the right time. That ability to peak at the right time is one of the things you’ve got to consider when you’re looking at the Derby finals as a one-off race.

There are many possibilities but I’m going with the one is in form, hoping she gets that all-important run along the outside.
I’ll play a 6-3-1 finish.

9.48pm: Irish Greyhound Derby Plate

I am pretty sweet on Ballinabola Una in this Plate final. She’s the youngest dog in the field by far but you can argue she’s the strongest as well. She won really well in the semi-final from the same draw. Beepers Lariot was the fastest in the semi-finals but she’s now in Trap 4 after running from T1 in the semi-final. That could be a problem.

Ballymac Pete will be moving across from the breeak and has plenty to find.

Ballinabola Una has enough to win.

7.59pm: Bobsleigh Dream (nap)

Bobsleigh Dream – It was a very good night for her at Nottingham on Monday, we know all about her. She was going well in The Derby but she got knocked out in the quarter-finals – as she just didn’t get any luck. She’s had a decent record when stepping up to the 600m this year, she’s three from four at Shelbourne Park and any box suits her.

She’s probably one of the best bets on the card so I’m going to make her the nap selection. She’s a joy to watch and best bet for me on the night.

8:50pm: Hawkfield Blue (nb)

I’m looking forward to seeing Hawkfield Blue who I rate as one of the bets of the night so I’ll make him my next best (nb) selection. This is a specialist Trap 1 operator over course and distance.

He ran really well when a good second in the Champions Stakes semi-finals behind Trinity Junior. He’s got his requited inside draw and must go very close.
