The English Derby starts next week and I have four dogs for you to follow through the competition, two English and two Irish. I’ll start with the Irish dogs.

Beach Avenue

My first selection is Beach Avenue, trained by Paul Hennessy, who is one of the more successful Irish trainers, winning two of the last five years. He won it back in 2016 with Jaytee Jet and more recently with Priceless Blake in 2019 and interesting enough both Beach Avenue and Priceless Blake have taken the same path when heading to the derby with both dogs contesting the open 600 in Shelbourne Park before heading across the water for a crack at the derby. Beach Avenue was hugely impressive when winning a trial stake a few weeks ago after coming from behind. He comes into the competition relatively fresh and he’s a good price.

Knight Tornado

My next Irish selection is Knight Tornado trained by Larry Dunne. This dog ran in the Juvenile Derby last year when finishing third. He dipped under the 28 second barrier in Shelbourne Park which is an extremely rare thing to do and shows his ability. He has only been seen once since last October where he was knocked out in the first round of the Easter Cup. He has been off since and has had a trial around Towcester which was moderate but he to comes into the competition fresh and as the derby progresses he should improve.

Thorn Falcon

Now for the two English dogs and the first of those is the Patrick Janssen-trained Thorn Falcon, who started his career in my local track of Enniscorthy posting 2876. Since then he went unbeaten through the KAB maiden derby at Towcester, where he was incredible in the final after finding trouble around the opening bend but he managed to go on and still win. This dog has it all and he’s won all four of his races. He has guts, determination and age on his side and should go a long way.

Amazing Wink

My final selection is Amazing Wink, who was previously trained in Ireland by John Linehan. He managed to reach the laurels final last year, finishing fifth but only beaten over three lengths. Since moving to the UK, he ran in the winter derby where he finished second and did run in the KAB derby behind Thorn Falcon on two occasions. He isn’t blessed with early but stays on very strong and he could sneak into a place most nights. If he ever traps, he will do a massive run but at a huge price, I expect him to be flying at the finish most nights.
