Spring is in the air, Easter has passed and in terms of the golfing calendar that can only mean one thing, it is time for the first Major of the year, The Masters at Augusta.
A par 72 measuring this year to 7555 yards, the key to success at Augusta is two-fold. Firstly, take advantage of the four Par 5’S and, secondly find the right spots on the greens with your approach play. Find the wrong level on the lightning-fast greens and it is nearly impossible to get down in two strokes.
As always the trip down Magnolia Lane brings with it huge anticipation, however this year with still no sign of the PGA Tour and LIV coming together, the Major’s will bring an extra dynamic, as it’s one of only four times we will see the game’s best all competing together. So, let’s take a look at some of the leading contenders starting with Scottie Scheffler.
Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler arrives here as strong a favourite as we have seen since the heyday of Tiger Woods. With two wins and a runner-up finish in his last three starts, the world number one sits head and shoulders above the rest in the approach play stats, so often key here.
If the 2022 Champion’s putter remotely cooperates it is impossible to not see him being in the mix down the stretch come Sunday. The decision we have to make then is do we go ‘all in’ on the Texan at prohibitive odds or do we hedge our bets and take him on? Ultimately then, while I would not put anyone off siding with him, but in the spirit of this column I will look to take him on.
Behind Scheffler in the market, we have the duo of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. McIlroy as we know is yet to crack the Augusta puzzle to complete the Grand Slam and I am reluctant to side with him here to end his ten-year winless Major drought. Rahm meanwhile has been fairly underwhelming so far this year on the LIV Tour and I struggle to see him being the first player to defend the Green Jacket since Tiger Woods in 2002.
Instead, then I will start with the player who so nearly rewarded us at Sawgrass recently
Xander Schauffele
Behind Scheffler, Xander Schauffele has been the most consistent player on the PGA Tour this year with six top tens in eight starts. A look at his stats shows us that he sits second from tee to green, 18th in approach play, and ninth around the greens, so he is performing strongly in all the key areas.
Throw in three top tens in his past five visits to Augusta and the Californian’s each-way credentials look rock solid.
Tony Finau
Now with six PGA Tour titles to his name, the next step for Tony Finau is to land one of the game’s biggest trophies.
Another player who thrives from tee to green, ranking eighth in approach play this season, Finau had the perfect warm-up when finishing second in Houston recently. Furthermore, with three top ten finishes in his six previous visits, like Schauffele, we know he has the game for the course.
Shane Lowry
On what is known as a second shot course, Shane Lowry is another who has been superb with his iron play this season, ranking third in approach play, while three top 20s in his last three starts, including a third at the API, show us he has the recent strong form Masters champions more often than not can boast.
A third-place finish here two years ago amongst a solid overall bank of form also gives us the course experience we are looking for.
Sahith Theegala
In great form this season with four top ten’s, Sahith Theegala has the perfect swashbuckling game to thrive at Augusta. Ninth on debut last year he could just follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jordan Spieth and Danny Willett who triumphed here on just their second visit.
Nick Taylor
Finally, in an event where Paddy are paying to 10 places each-way before Thursday’s tee off, I shall wrap things up with a triple-digit play on Nick Taylor. The Canadian has really come into his own over the past 12 months landing his home open and more recently winning in Phoenix.
Strong both in approach play and on the greens Taylor played solidly on his only previous visit here and this gutsy competitor could just spring a surprise at big odds.
