VIKTOR HOVLAND TO WIN RICKIE FOWLER (EACH WAY) TOMMY FLEETWOOD (EACH WAY) LUDVIG ABERG (EACH WAY)
Historically the Scottish Open has attracted a very talented field of the world’s best who look to fine-tune their game before the Open Championship, and this year is no different. The Renaissance Golf Club, situated on the east coast of Scotland, will play host to this tournament for the fifth year in a row.
The 7,237 yard par-70 should be a good warm-up challenge for the world’s best before the test of Royal Liverpool next week. Length off the tee aswell as accuracy is key to success with good ball strikers having an advantage in what will be challenging windy conditions.
Viktor Hovland – To Win
Viktor Hovland has taken huge strides this year cementing himself as one of the very best in the world. Seven top-ten finishes, along with a win at the Memorial, has the young Norwegian poised to make a good run at the next two weeks of action. Having finished T-4th in the Open Championship last year, Viktor is no stranger to success on the links. His powerful ball striking and length off the tee will be a major advantage here, where scoring on the par-5s is key to shooting low at the Renaissance club. I’d expect to see him in contention on Sunday.
Possibly the most in-form golfer on Tour at the moment is Rickie Fowler, and he looks primed for another big weekend in Scotland. Winner of this event back in 2014, Fowler has always enjoyed the challenge of links golf. Match that with some incredible form where T-13 has been his worst result in the last five tournaments which included a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in his last outing. That iconic Sunday orange should be on our TV screens in an event where Paddy is paying each-way to 8 places before Thursday’s tee off.
Tommy Fleetwood is another who has seen a return to form this year. Five top-five finishes this year for Tommy, along with a lot of consistent golf, make him one to watch. His tee to green superiority will be a huge benefit coming into this weekend’s action at the Renaissance Club, a course where last year he finished T-4 and in 2020 lost out narrowly in a playoff. It’s very easy to shout on Fleetwood and the Fairway Jesus looks like a great each-way punt this week.
Ludvig Aberg’s rise to prominence has been incredible to watch. Having only turned pro this year after finishing 1st in the PGA Tour University programme, the 23 year old Swede has gone from strength to strength. A combination of being incredibly accurate off the tee and stellar approach play, has put Aberg right in Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald’s sights. Finishing in T-4 at the John Deere Classic, Aberg comes into this event in form and full of confidence. If you’re looking for an outsider, Ludvig could well be worth an each-way bet this week.
