Ben Coley’s BMW Championship each-way picks:
Viktor Hovland
Tommy Fleetwood
Thomas Pieters
NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?
The organisers here would like one of the big names from Europe to stand up and win this tournament. The last thing they want is one of the LIV golfers doing so! Some of the best golfers in Europe have turned out. Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are back at this event which is fantastic.
Viktor Hovland
I think Viktor Hovland is the each-way value here with Paddy playing eight places. He’s been a bit quiet since The Open but he’s only played four times. He was 11th here a couple of years ago before he had won any tournament as a professional.
He’s won six times since which is prolific. I think Hovland’s an ideal fit for this course and certainly at this level he’ll tick off a load of wins when he comes over to Europe and I think that can start here, in what would be the biggest win of his career.
Tommy Fleetwood
In years gone by English players have risen to the occasion in this tournament. For a long time they only had one tournament that they could play in England but there are a few more on the schedule now, but not ones that Tommy Fleetwood can necessarily fit into his schedule as he tries to play on both tours.
This is a massive event for the English players and eight of the last 14 winners have come from England. So, hopefully he can do it. When we last saw him he was in the top five in back-to-back weeks. He’s taken some personal time off since so he could be rusty but I think he’ll be looking to getting back to the day job and he’ll have enormous support here. If he’s in the form we saw at St Andrews he should be threatening the top 10.
Thomas Pieters
We all saw how Thomas Pieters played in the Ryder Cup six years ago and we all thought he should go on and win Majors and pay on the PGA Tour. I actually think he’s quite happy with his lot being a European Tour player, largely staying at home in Belgium and he’s got a child now. I guess not everybody wants to be Rory McIlroy and that’s fine.
He has won six times on the European Tour, most recently in January where he beat a world-class field. I was surprised at the odds here because he’s playing fantastically, he’s not missed a cut since the spring and he was in the top 10 last time out.
He’s got a good record at Wentworth and I think he’s really matured as a golfer. I think we’ll get a big-name European winner, he fits into that bracket and hopefully this week is the start of his bid to return to the Ryder Cup next year which is very much where he belongs.
