Louth v Cork
3pm
Cork to Win
This is probably the toughest game of the weekend to call. Louth should have home advantage but this game is being held in Navan. They’ve already won this year in Navan so they’re not going to fear Cork. Cork will be looking to get off to a good start though. They had a very disappointing Munster campaign, losing to Clare will have hurt them badly.
Cork haven’t been great this season and Louth are fresh from their kicking from Dublin. Mickey Harte’s teams have always come back stronger after big defeats and they’ll really want to try and get a win on the board here. I’d still be veering in the direction of Cork though, I think they’re a better team. I’d go for a straight win here for Cork.
Armagh v Westmeath
TV: GAA GO, 4:45pm
Armagh -7
I think this’ll be the ideal game for Armagh to kickstart their Championship after the disappointment of the Ulster final which they possibly should have won and were unlucky to lose on penalties. I think if they’d been playing the previous week you’d have had to fancy Westmeath but having two weeks off means Armagh will see themselves as having the better chance here, especially since it’s a home for them.
I can’t see them losing this. The handicap is at -7 so the question is will they put Westmeath to the sword here. I think with the toll of what happened two weeks ago, they might tire towards the end but they could win this by seven for sure.
Derry -4
Monaghan were really impressive in their Ulster Quarter Final where they really blew Tyrone away. I’m sure Monaghan won’t allow Derry to get a big lead over them here because Derry are more than happy to sit in and let teams come at them and they’ll really hit you hard then. And they’ll hit you really hard where it hurts with that running game they have.
In terms of their players, Derry will have really settled down over the last number of weeks and that whole managerial situation has been resolved and is not hanging over them anymore. I’d expect Derry to be winning here, they’ll have their eyes on bigger prizes and they should be winning by five points here.
