WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
We’ve got another big weekend of GAA Championship Hurling to get stuck into and we’ve got Waterford legend John Mullane to guide us through the action.
On the agenda for John is Kilkenny v Wexford and Clare v Waterford.
18:00 Saturday – Kilkenny v Wexford – Handicap: Kilkenny -5
TV: Sky Sports Arena
Wexford need to win to stay in the All-Ireland and if there’s anything in Wexford, we need to see it on Saturday evening.
They’ll be absolutely kicking themselves that they didn’t go to Mullingar and get the win against Westmeath. If Wexford can beat Kilkenny that would put them on six points and it would come down to scoring averages.
But that’s a big ask with Kilkenny coming off the back of a very good win last weekend. T.J Reid seems to be back to himself, Richie Reid played very well at center-back and Adrian Mullen got five points.
We know how hard a place it is to go and get a result and Wexford won’t need reminding that last time they were at Nowlan Park they were comprehensively beaten by Waterford in that league semi-final.
So it’s Kilkenny to win for me and I think they’ll cover the five point spread. It could be between the five and 10 point margin. Kilkenny with a -5 handicap is my bet.
Eoin Cody First Goalscorer
Eoin Cody got a goal up in Salthill and set up the other goal for Billy Ryan. He could be the guy to go and put your 10 euros on so I’m going for Eoin Cody to be the first goalscorer in this match.

16:00 Clare v Waterford – Handicap: Clare +4
TV: Premier Sports 2
The danger for Waterford is that they can ill-afford to get sucked into all the talk about Clare resting players like Tony Kelly. I can tell you that no matter what team Clare take to the field they’re going to be extremely difficult to beat.
Waterford are going to have to play very well to win this match and they’re going to have to improve on last year’s poor performance against Cork.
Can Waterford win it? Well, I suspect that Brian Lohan will rest two or three players for Clare and will bring in the likes of Ian Galvin, Shane Meehan and Aron Shanagher. They’re good players and won’t weaken any team.
I think this game will be very, very tight and I think Waterford will just edge it, possibly by a point or two, no more than three. I’m going with Clare on a handicap of +4. A four point head start at home, I’d take that all day long.
Dessie Hutchinson First Goalscorer
If Clare are going to be the first ones to score then I think someone like Aron Shanagher would be the first goalscorer.
But if Waterford can get the ball back into Dessie Hutchinson, who’s been starved of ball the last couple of matches, then we saw against Limerick that if you get the ball into him he will do the damage.
He’s possibly the best corner-forward in the country and he’s not getting enough ball into him. If we can get it to him he can do the damage so I’m going for Dessie Hutchinson first goalscorer in this match.
