Sprint Race – Oscar Piastri
Yes, that’s right, it’s another Sprint Weekend, which means teams and drivers have less time than normal to test set ups before we get stuck into the proper action.
That should suit McLaren more than the other nine teams because the MCL38 is, without a doubt, the strongest car and, as a result, you would expect both drivers to be starting towards the front of the grid for the Sprint and the Race.
Lando Norris has struggled from the start at times in 2024 and the shorter format of the Sprint could play into Oscar Piastri‘s hands if the Aussie can secure the lead early doors.
Piastri has either held his position or made up places in three Sprints unlike his team-mate this season so he’s worth a play at the prices.
Overall Qualification Winner – Lando Norris
Lando Norris is a man in red-hot form over one lap having secured pole position at five of the last nine Grands Prix, including three of four since the summer break.
As previously mentioned, McLaren are the quickest team on the grid and the Brit is making the most of the pace offered up by his car so you would expect him to be there or thereabouts.
Could his team-mate be a danger? Norris leads Oscar Piastri 15-3 in qualifying in the current campaign.
Norris hit the post in last season’s qualifying session at the Circuit of the Americas when finishing .150s behind Charles Leclerc – and the Ferrari ace could be the biggest concern.
Points Finish – Nico Hülkenberg
A regular punt in this column, Nico Hülkenberg is odds-against with Paddy Power to secure a Points Finish.
The Haas driver ended a five-race pointless streak by coming home ninth in last month’s Singapore Grand Prix to climb above Lance Stroll into 10th place in the drivers’ standings.
Hülkenberg has a decent record of top-10 finishes at the Circuit of the Americas – four returns from nine in Formula 1 – and has scored points on six occasions – plus one Sprint – this term.
He’s, arguably, unlucky not to have scored even more having finished 11th in a further seven outings.
