After a cracking Azerbaijan Grand Prix in which Oscar Piastri took the chequered flag to move McLaren clear of Red Bull in the constructors’ championship, the Formula 1 roadshow heads to Singapore.
Our tipster Alex Harris fired in a winning punt at Baku and has run the rule over Paddy Power’s Singapore Grand Prix betting to pick out four fancies.
F1 Tips
Overall Qualification Winner – Charles Leclerc
Top 6 Finish – Sergio Perez
Points Finish – Alex Albon
Not To Be Classified – Yuki Tsunoda
WHEN: Sunday, September 22 – 13:00
WHERE: Marina Bay Street Circuit
TV: Sky Sports F1
Overall Qualification Winner – Charles Leclerc
I successfully backed Charles Leclerc to be the Overall Qualification Winner in Azerbaijan – and Ferrari’s main man can grab the top spot for the second weekend in a row.
The Monegasque has a superb record in Qualifying at the Marina Bay Street Circuit since joining the Prancing Horse having claimed pole in 2019 and 2022 and starting third in 2023.
He can also make a claim to the title of ‘King of the Streets’ having qualified second (Saudi Arabia), first (Monaco) and first (Azerbaijan) at proper street circuits this season.
It is likely to be a competitive session as McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull – as well as Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz – will be in the mix but Leclerc’s record is too strong to ignore.
Top 6 Finish – Sergio Perez
For the second weekend on the spin, I think Paddy Power’s price for Sergio Perez to secure a Top 6 Finish is too big at odds-against.
The Mexican outdrove Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen in Azerbaijan and was in contention for a podium position before tangling with Carlos Sainz on the penultimate lap.
‘Checo’ appeared to quickly get to grips with the latest batch of upgrades bolted on the RB20 – team principal Christian Horner’s admission that their recent wrong turn can be traced back to Barcelona in 2023 can be seen as a justification of the driver’s criticisms – and he should take plenty of confidence from Baku.
Perez has a good record in Singapore – including victory in 2022 – and is a different beast on street circuits so he should deliver another strong performance this weekend.
Points Finish – Alex Albon
Alex Albon is bidding to score points for the third Grand Prix in a row after placing ninth and seventh in Italy and Azerbaijan respectively.
Williams’ improvement since the summer break has intensified the battle for the minor points positions and the Grove-based team have, arguably, leapfrogged Haas and RB in the pecking order.
While Monza and Baku probably play to the FW46’s strengths more than Marina Bay, the car should still prove competitive enough for Albon to be in the mix for a Points Finish.
Not To Be Classified – Yuki Tsunoda
Poor Yuki Tsunoda‘s enduring a miserable run of form – and Marina Bay is not exactly his favourite circuit on the calendar.
The Japanese driver has retired from the last two Grands Prix – overheating in Italy before damage spelled the end in Azerbaijan – and failed to finish in two previous starts in Singapore.
The tight track is prone to causing retirements, with three drivers not being classified in 2023 and six in 2022.
Tsunoda crashed on his Singapore debut two years ago and a first-lap collision prompted his exit from the Race in last season’s edition. He could come a cropper once again.
