It’s incredible how quickly the 2024 Formula 1 season has transformed from Max Verstappen and Red Bull domination to a genuine fight for the drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
After being beaten to the chequered flag by Lando Norris in Miami, the Dutchman had to pull out all the stops to win at Imola before being well down the field in the Monaco Grand Prix as Charles Leclerc led from start to finish to finally claim the spoils in his home race.
If the likes of Norris and Leclerc can trouble Verstappen in Canada then you would fancy their chances of sustaining a challenge for the rest of the season, especially when you factor Red Bull’s off-the-track issues into consideration.
You have to hand it to McLaren and Ferrari for closing the gap to the Bulls, but they will have their work cut out in Canada. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been a happy hunting ground for Verstappen as he has converted pole into victory in the last two years.
It is a track that features long straights and tight turns so teams will need to get their set-ups on point for a good weekend. It promises to be exciting.
I’ve run the rule over Paddy Power’s odds for the Canadian Grand Prix and picked out a couple of fancies. Let’s get into gear and head on over!

#WhatOddsPaddy – Charles Leclerc or Lando Norris to Win the Race
I was against Max Verstappen in Monaco and it is possible that Red Bull will be in for another challenging weekend as their vulnerabilities over the kerbs could be exposed once again.
The greatest concern for the Bulls is that their huge advantage over the rest of the field has been eroded and upgrades could be comprised because of the cost of the damage inflicted on Perez’s car in Monaco.
They are effectively facing a pincer movement from Ferrari, who have made steady progress over the last few years, and McLaren, who have been stunned by the incredible impact of the upgrades slapped on the MCL38 before Miami.
While the presence of long high-speed straights means it is impossible to rule Verstappen or team-mate Sergio Perez – fresh from signing a new two-year contract – out of calculations for the race win, the price offered on this #WhatOddsPaddy punt is hard to ignore.
Charles Leclerc delivered a masterclass to finally win his home Grand Prix – I tipped the Fastest Qualifier/Win Race double at a tasty 6/1 – and he looks like the man to bring the fight to Verstappen in the battle for the drivers’ title. He appears to have got to grips with the SF-24 and a record of 10-3-5-4 from four previous cracks at the Canadian Grand Prix in inferior machinery suggests he should be in the mix to take the chequered flag.
Lando Norris finally broke his maiden status in Miami a few rounds ago and will be eager to get back on the podium after finishing fourth in Monaco last time out. He has the speed over one lap and race pace to attack from the front, while you can put a line through his recent efforts in Canada because McLaren struggled in the first half of the season in recent years.
Points Finish – Yuki Tsunoda and Nico Hülkenberg
Yuki Tsunoda is enjoying a fine season, having collected 19 points to sit 10th in the drivers’ championship. He has scored in the last three races – as well as the Miami sprint – and is, quite frankly, a man in red-hot form.
The Japanese driver has reached Q3 in six of the eight qualifying sessions in 2024 and is backed to score points in Canada for the first time at the third attempt.
Nico Hülkenberg is another midfield driver enjoying a cracking campaign, having bagged six points from three races and one sprint, while hitting the post on three other occasions.
The German clearly enjoys the Montreal track because he has scored points in six of his 10 previous F1 visits and Haas should have the pace to be in the mix for a top-10 finish this weekend, especially if the predicted rain wreaks havoc with the usual running order.
