There will be plenty of glitz and glamour as the Formula 1 roadshow heads to Monaco for round eight of the 2024 championship this weekend.
As well as being one of the most prestigious prizes in motorsport – and one leg of the Triple Crown – Monaco signifies the start of a three-team scrap for the constructors’ title as it looks like Red Bull’s advantage at the head of the pack has effectively been eroded by McLaren and Ferrari.
McLaren were emboldened by Lando Norris’ victory in Miami and their strong showing at Imola proved that was no fluke, while the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz continue to hit the frame.
Red Bull had a tough time at Imola last weekend and it was only because of Max Verstappen’s genius behind the wheel that the RB20 took the chequered flag in a thrilling finale.
The lack of overtaking opportunities on the Monaco track makes Saturday’s qualifying session, arguably, the most important of the whole season, with Verstappen pulling out a sensational lap to take pole en route to the race win in last year’s edition.
I’ve run the rule over Paddy Power’s odds for the Monaco Grand Prix and picked out a couple of fancies. Let’s get into gear and head on over!
Monaco Grand Prix
Qualifying: Saturday 3pm
Race: Sunday 2pm
TV: Sky Sports F1
Fastest Qualifier/ Race Winner Double – Charles Leclerc
Yes, that’s right folks, I’m going against Max Verstappen for once. The three-time world champion proved his class to complete the Fastest Qualifier/ Race Winner Double despite Red Bulls struggles at Imola – but I think the grid’s leading team might find Monaco a bit too much.
McLaren and Ferrari have significantly reduced the gap at the front of the grid and Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko is predicting a tricky weekend for his team against their improving rivals.
While Lando Norris is on fire and Charles Leclerc seems to be cursed around Monaco, I’m backing the Monegasque to finally take the chequered flag in his home race.
He has started two of the last three editions of the Monaco Grand Prix on pole and would merely have to hold position, which seems plausible amid Ferrari’s improving race pace, if he gets the job done on Saturday.
Points Finish – Esteban Ocon
Oh, Esty Besty, it’s been a tricky start to the season for you, hasn’t it?
Let’s not beat about the bush here, Alpine have been pretty terrible and it’s some ‘achievement’ to have slipped behind RB and Haas in the constructors’ standings, although there have been green shoots of recovery in recent weeks.
Esteban Ocon scored the team’s first – and only – point of the season in Miami, while the layout of the Monaco track should mean they are fighting Aston Martin and RB for the minor placings in the top 10.
The Frenchman also has an encouraging record around Monaco, with three points finishes – including last year’s podium – from his five visits to the Principality and qualifying no lower than 11th in his last four outings here.
