It finally happened! After a string of podium finishes without standing on the top step in Formula 1, Lando Norris finally secured a victory as McLaren took Miami by storm to suggest the 2024 season is not going to be the Red Bull procession many feared.
After six races in Asia, Oceania and North America, the campaign is finally set to generate some momentum as the action comes thick and fast over the next two and half months, with seven of the next eight before the summer break taking place in Europe.
Imola in Italy is the first port of call for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix – the fourth edition since its inception in 2020 and the first since 2022 because last year’s was cancelled due to flooding in the local area.
Max Verstappen – seeking a third victory in the race after successes in 2021 and 2022 – will be eager to bounce back to winning ways after being beaten by Norris in Miami last time out.
Red Bull have clearly been rattled by the emerging threat from McLaren and Ferrari as the constructors’ championship leaders are set to bring a big upgrades package to Imola in a bid to rebuild their stonking advantage over their rivals.
I’ve run the rule over Paddy Power’s odds for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and picked out a couple of fancies. Let’s get into gear and head on over!
Emilia Romagna Grand Prix
Qualifying: Saturday 3pm
Race: Sunday 2pm
TV: Sky Sports F1
Fastest Qualifier, Fastest Lap and Win Race – Max Verstappen
The beauty of Lando Norris’ victory in Miami – and Red Bull’s nightmare in Australia four rounds ago – means we’re back to odds-against for Max Verstappen to complete the Fastest Qualifier, Fastest Lap and Win Race treble.
You would expect the Dutchman to come roaring back to form after the disappointment of finishing second last time out, and he has a superb record in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, securing the hat-trick in 2022 and winning the 2021 edition from third on the grid.
He has secured the Fastest Qualifier, Fastest Lap and Win Race treble in two of this season’s six races and while it is the middle leg that provides a slight concern, the drivers that took the chequered flag at Imola since the track’s return to the F1 calendar claimed the bonus point on two of the three occasions.
Verstappen’s chances should be aided by the upgrades Red Bull are taking to Italy. The team have consistently nailed this set of technical regulations since their introduction in 2022 so you would imagine – despite the off-track problems and design genius Adrian Newey’s impending departure – that the new parts will be bang on.
Points Finish – Yuki Tsunoda & Daniel Ricciardo
Miami suggested there is still fire in Daniel Ricciardo‘s belly as he converted fourth place in the Sprint Shootout to fourth in the Sprint, while the weekend further provided clues that RB are progressing as team-mate Yuki Tsunoda finished seventh in the Race.
The technical data also indicated that RB have overtaken Aston Martin as the fifth-quickest team on the grid, which surely means getting both cars into the top 10 – they both scored points in the Miami Sprint – is imminent.
That could happen this weekend because Ricciardo and Tsunoda have some good form in the books at Imola. The Aussie was third with Renault in 2020 and sixth with McLaren in 2021, while Tsunoda took seventh under the AlphaTauri banner in 2022.
The Faenza-based team bagged points in the three editions of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to date and it’s worth taking a chance of both drivers scoring.
