It’s coming… to our screens finally on Tuesday afternoon! While Belgium v Portugal may have had the edge on it in terms of quality, there is no doubting that England v Germany is the most must-see tie of the last 16.
We will try and keep this preview as Euro 96 free as we can, but this tie certainly presents England boss Gareth Southgate a chance to put a few long held demons to rest. His charges have quietly made their way to this stage with a pair of 1-0 victories over Croatia and Czech Republic, as well as a draw with neighbours Scotland, to top Group D.
Tuesday 17:00 – England v Germany
BBC One / RTÉ Two
Meanwhile, Germany have uncharacteristically stuttered their way out of Group F (the group formally known as the ‘Group of Death’), and have been far from their unusually efficient selves. There was no shame in their loss to world champions France in their opening fixture, and all looked rosy in the German garden as they put four past Portugal on their next day out.
But, with six minutes to go last Wednesday night, Joachim Löw side’s were heading out of the tournament when trailing group minnows Hungary 2-1 at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Thankfully for the Germans, Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka took advantage of familiar surroundings and grabbed an equaliser that was enough for the home side to squeeze through to the knockout stages.

So, what are we tipping on Tuesday you ask? Well, we’ve studied the delightful data on Andy Robson’s information-packed cheat sheet to pick out four fab punts that hopefully can score for you.

Harry Maguire To Be Carded
Harry Maguire came into England’s starting line-up against the Czech Republic after returning from injury in their final group game. There are worries he still might not be 100% fit and will probably be targeted by the pacey German attack. The Manchester United captain was the second-most carded player in the Premier League with 11 yellows, so don’t be surprised if he comes to the attention of the referee here.
Kai Havertz To Have 1 Or More Shots On Target
After a tough start to his Chelsea career, Kai Havertz has come into his own in the past few months and crucially scored the winning goal in the Champions League final. Havertz has two goals at the tournament so far, and an average of 1.27 shots on target per match according to the cheat sheet. The Chelsea man should start just behind the striker, and will really test England’s robust defence.
Raheem Sterling To Have 1 Or More Shots On Target
Raheem Sterling is the only Englishman to have scored at the tournament so far, and that surely makes him a starter on Tuesday. Germany are not as solid at the back as they used to be and shipped five goals in the group stages. England will get chances and Sterling will continue to get into the box, so you can expect him to test the palms of Manuel Neuer at some stage.
Robin Gosens To Have 1 Or More Shots On Target
We’ve been really impressed by Robin Gosens so far and he can cause England plenty of problems down their left side. Gosens has scored 11 goals in 32 league appearances for Atalanta and also found the net against Portugal last week at this tournament. He averages 0.88 shots on target per match and we expect him to raid forward at Wembley like he did in that 4-2 victory over Portugal.
