Leicester to win by exactly 1 Goal

Leicester have the motivation to win here not just to bag a Premier League spot, but also to try and push for the league title and to ultimately realistically remove Southampton from the top-two equation, who still have the chance to take points off two of the top-three in their remaining games.

The Foxes got the job done versus West Brom on Saturday in a game where their opponents arguably deserved something from it. However, it is all about results at this stage of the season, especially as they headed into that following back-to-back 1-0 losses to relegation candidates. The scores of their previous six matches read 2-1, 1-0, 1-0, 2-1, 3-1 and 1-0, and another tight match is anticipated here.

Southampton is a dangerous opponent to face as they’re capable of blowing any team away on any given day, but only two of their 10 Championship away victories came against teams positioned in the top half. Plus, they need to be winning here, and Leicester are just the sort of team to take advantage of quite a desperate opponent that will have to take risks at some stage.

Over 9.5 Corners

No team averages more corners in Championship action than Southampton. They have averaged 7.5 per game, and therefore an obvious case is made for their clashes to defeat corner tallies. This is a game they need to be winning and given the degree of vulnerability around Leicester, and Southampton won’t be coming to park the bus, then each team should contribute to at least ten corners overall.

In total, Southampton’s average corner tally for and against is over 11.00, whilst Leicester have regularly seen plenty of corners in recent encounters. This has been a winning bet in the last seven fixtures involving Enzo Maresca’s side in all competitions. With the sheer offensive talent on show in what is anticipated to be quite an open affair, corners should hopefully be a safe call.

Over 2.5 Southampton Cards

Leicester will end the evening in the top-two no matter what, whereas everything is kind of on the line for Southampton. They know realistically this is their last shot to remain in automatic promotion contention and following the unexpected weekend defeat at Cardiff boss Russell Martin has demanded a reaction. He insists the top two is still within reach, so they shouldn’t be turning up feeling too sorry for themselves.

However, they are arguably the more desperate of the two teams to win given the circumstances. They’ve also been known to lose their cool in these big matches across the season. In their four season meetings against the current top-three, they’ve received two red cards; averaging 2.75 cards per game in the process.

Also, this is game seven of eight in April for Saints, who are surely feeling it having played every three or four days for about three weeks now.

Jamie Vardy To Score Or Be Shown A Card

37-year-old Jamie Vardy was on the scoresheet at the weekend to get his side over the line and he is likely to be challenged to go again from the start. In normal circumstances, the striker doesn’t tend to play back-to-back games in quick succession, but he is the form striker at the club, plus they aren’t back in action again until next Monday when facing Preston, so one suspects Maresca will look to get a good 70 minutes or so out of him at least.

It is well-documented the sort of ‘cheeky chap’ he is and he’d love to potentially be the man to claim promotion for Leicester and produce his customary celebration in front of opposition supporters. Above all, he is their Championship top scorer with 15, including eight since the start of February.

He’ll be pressing high against a Southampton side that play out from the back and it’ll only take one bad challenge, or maybe one too many rants towards the referee, that could lead to a potential booking.
