Coventry v Man United
FA Cup semifinal at Wembley Stadium, London
TV: ITV, Sunday, 3:30pm

With the reshuffle of the FA Cup favouring the bigger sides again, we’re running low on feel-good stories in football. Soon the idea of a small club hosting a giant will be cast into distant memory, it seems.

Yes, the likes of Morecambe can still draw Arsenal, but they can no longer earn the right with a draw as the replay concept of the tournament has been scrapped.

Seeing a big club fail to knock the minnows out at first attempt and then having to wheel their stars into a cowshed to avoid embarrassment was British heritage.

But anyway. Manchester – the cultural hub of the north. They have Oasis, football, and Coronation Street.

Coventry? Well, they’ve got a song about having multiple cathedrals.

Man United to Win

No recency bias on this, and I totally understand that teams can reset for big games, but I watched Coventry lose 0-3 away to Birmingham last weekend in preparation for this piece, and oh boy.

Equally adding in that the game in question was the nail in their coffin when it comes to landing a playoff spot, I just don’t see how a Man United team so desperate for silverware to cover over over the cracks will fall here.

Over 1.5 First Half Goals

The team talk in the United dressing room will be based on them scoring early so Coventry can’t sit back and just catch them on the break.

Luckily for them, Coventry have gotten themselves into a rut of conceding early in games lately, being 2-0 down inside the opening half of both of their most recent league outings.

There’s actually been a first-half goal in every one of their last ten Championship games, and multiple first-half goals in eight of those.

Bruno Fernandes to Score Anytime

He’s scored four goals in his last three Premier League games, and is constantly coming up in big moments despite perceptions being otherwise.

Everyone needs to relax on the Bruno hate because without him, United would resemble an even more mid midtable unit.

I also quite like taking penalty takers against teams who’ll be parked in their own box because stray legs are very common in these games.

Ellis Simms to have a 1 or Shot on Target

There’s a very easy formula for success in a Man United bet builder. You find the opposition striker. And you back them to have a shot on target.

Bruno Fernandes to have 2 or more Shots on Target

Backing him to score has us halfway home, and he’s generally better on bigger pitches where he sits in pockets. His goal figures aren’t where many expected, but he’s had two shots or more on target in seven United games since Christmas.

It’s one of the sounder bets you can have in this market based on recent form.
