Aberdeen v Celtic
Scottish FA Cup semifinal at Hampden Park, Glasgow
TV: BBC One Scotland, iPlayer, Saturday 12:30pm
Celtic -1
Celtic are aiming to be the first club through to the Scottish Cup final when they tackle Aberdeen at Hampden at Satuday lunchtime. It is a game they expect to win and it is a game that they should win.
The Hoops have had their difficult moments this season but they have been in rampant form lately. They have scored three or more goals in seven of their last eight games, and though Aberdeen have tightened up their defensive work lately, they have not tackled a team of Celtic’s class.
While this match ended in a 1-1 draw when these sides last met in February, the head-to-head record is otherwise lopsided. Celtic have won the previous four matches between these clubs by an astonishing score of 18-1. These games have all taken place in the last 14 months, with 3-1 and 6-0 victories this season.
Over 2.5 Goals
Backing goals in this encounter makes a lot of sense. Not only have Celtic been red-hot in front of goal in recent weeks, 26 times in their last eight matches across all competitions, but they have not been particularly solid at the back. Across this run of fixtures, they have kept only a couple of clean sheets.
It is Brendan Rodgers’ side who are likely to dictate this match, with the array of attacking options the Hoops possess liable to break the game open at some stage. The Glasgow club have no fewer than 12 players in their ranks who have five or more goals plus assists this season, giving them plenty of sources of danger.
Matt O’Riley Anytime Goalscorer
The odds on O’Riley to find the net in this game are very long at 2.8. He is, after all, Celtic’s top scorer in all competitions with 13 goals in 32 starts, boasting a ratio that is not dissimilar to the more celebrated Kyogo Furuhashi.
The Denmark international is also a man in form. He has netted in both of his last two games and proved himself a figure for the big occasion as he netted against Rangers in the Old Firm game earlier this month.
Aberdeen to have 3 or more Cards
With Aberdeen’s season on the line in this game, expect Peter Leven’s side to turn in a fiery display.
That has certainly been the case in previous matches against Celtic this season, with the Dons shown three cards in each of their last two encounters between these teams. Against Rangers, the other team in the Premiership at Celtic’s level, they have been regulars in the referee’s notebook, with six bookings across their last two games.
Celtic are good at drawing their opponents into picking up cards. In five of the last 10 games they have played, their opponents have seen three or more yellow cards.
Celtic to have 7 or more Corners
Celtic have been the kings of winning corners in Scotland this season. In the Premiership, they have averaged an astonishing 9.27 per game, while they have won 8.18 corners on average away from home this season.
Aberdeen, meanwhile, have made a habit of conceding large volumes of corners. With 5.82 per match against them when not playing at Pittodrie, they are in the top half of the table for conceding these situations when on the road.
The Dons are likely to come under substantial pressure in this encounter. They have conceded at least nine corners in the three matches they have played against Celtic this season and there is little reason to believe that record will break here.
