Bournemouth v Man United
Premier League match at the Vitality Stadium
TV: Sky Sports Premier League, Main Event, 5:30pm

There are tough jobs in this world. Brain surgeon, rocket scientist, Chelsea manager and so on. But the hardest gig going in 2023/24 is trying to predict what’s going to happen in a Manchester United match.

In the last week or so, Erik ten Hag’s boys have played Chelsea and Liverpool. In the first game, they went 2-0 down, then 3-2 up, were winning in the 99th minute and lost. Against their fierce rivals, the shot count was 17-0 before Bruno Fernandes scored from the half way line. United then took the lead but ultimately drew.

For all the madness and chaos, only twice this season have the Red Devils lost by more than two goals. Once was to Manchester City, naturally, but the other was against Bournemouth. Is this going to be a routine home win?

Bournemouth to Win

The Cherries won 3-0 at Old Trafford in December and missed a big chance so the damage could have been worse for United. That was very much in one of Bournemouth’s up periods this season. The bad news for the visitors is that they are currently in another.

Andoni Iraola started Premier League life by not winning any of the first nine games of the season. His side then won seven of the next nine, only to then go seven matches without a victory. They have since rebounded with four wins and a draw from the last six. It’s been a rollercoaster, even if they haven’t had the game to game, minute to minute madness which has engulfed their opponents this weekend.

One of the standout themes of ten Hag’s tenure is that his side has struggled in away games against half decent teams. United have played a total of 20 matches on the road against sides who finished in the top 12 last season or those that are currently in those positions this season.

Their record is three wins, four draws and 13 defeats. The victories were all by one goal and two of them saw the decisive strike occur in the 93rd minute or later. While the Cherries are only 12th in the table, they have won their last three at home and took United apart in December. With the underlying data suggesting they should be shorter priced favourites, back Bournemouth to Win.

Both Teams to Score

The same expected goal numbers suggest this is the second likeliest match of the weekend to see both teams score (behind Newcastle versus Tottenham, if you’re interested). This goes against the recent head-to-head history, though, with one side failing to net in the last three meetings and four of the previous five.

But this is Manchester United Football Club, it’s what they do. Their last four matches saw them score and concede, as did five of the last six. The exception was when Everton drew a blank and they only score if someone kicks the ball against Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Both teams have scored in United’s last seven away games in the league so they should here too.

Dominic Solanke to Score

Dominic Solanke bagged the opener when these teams last met, with Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi the other scorers, and he is the only logical choice for a goal scorer.

With 16 league goals in 2023/24, the former Liverpool man has more than twice as many as any other player from either side. If there’s a doubt, it’s that his goal at Old Trafford is his only strike against one of the big six clubs since last April.

However, he has also scored against Newcastle (three times), Aston Villa, and West Ham in the last five months and they are all around United in the table. Solanke to score any time here, pals.

Ove 11.5 Corners

The last meeting of these teams featured 14 corners and this clash should get close to that level once again. These teams are both in the division’s top three for total corners this season.

Only two matches at the Vitality Stadium in 2023/24 have seen fewer than 11, and the last of them was in September. United’s away games have been more inconsistent (in all senses) but have also seen an average of 12.7 corners each, so we should hit the Over 11.5 Corners marker.

Under 3.5 Cards

Match referee Tony Harrington was at Molineux last weekend and contributed to the entertainment by giving Wolves and West Ham a penalty each as well as seven yellow cards between them.

History implies he won’t be as busy here, as the three meetings since Bournemouth were last promoted have only seen eight bookings in total. While Harrington’s card rate is on the rise in his brief Premier League career, he remains below average for dishing them out. As he’s generally a safe bet for showing Under 3.5 Cards and these teams seem to like each other, that selection will see us out in style.
