Tuesday 8pm: Leeds v Sunderland
Championship match at Elland Road, Leeds
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football

Leeds To Win

An obvious case is made for Leeds winning this game. For all that Daniel Farke’s side suffered defeat last time out, this was against play-off chasing Coventry and it was also their first league loss since West Brom on December 29th. With that 15 league game unbeaten streak behind them, that could focus the minds ahead of the run-in.

They did surrender a top-two place as a result and they cannot rely on Leicester and/or Ipswich dropping too many more points. Sunderland are arguably the exact opposition Leeds would have wanted at this stage. They’re firmly in mid-table and recent displays have been that of a side counting down the days until the season ends. It has been a turbulent campaign for a Sunderland team that has won just four of 17 in 2024 in all competitions.

Both Teams To Score? No

Leeds haven’t returned from the international break necessarily looking like the side prior to that two-week break. Of their last nine matches prior to the break, Leeds kept seven clean sheets in that run. They’ve conceded five in their last three and Farke will know that keeping a clean sheet here would go a long way to getting three points, especially having only failed to score once at home this season.

One problem Sunderland have had is a lack of goals from their cluster of centre forwards. So much so, attacking midfielder Jobe Bellingham has found himself playing in this role of late. Star man and winger Jack Clarke is now back from injury but Leeds will believe keeping him quiet is to key to claiming a 19th Championship clean sheet.

CRYSENCIO SUMMERVILLE To Score Anytime

A run of seven games without a goal for Summerville is now a thing of the past and the Dutchman has helped himself to two goals across the last three games. He remains Leeds’ top scorer and greatest goal threat, so is always a good shout for a goal, especially in a home game versus mid-table opposition.

Summerville simply loves it at Elland Road on a count of 11 of his 17 league strikes coming here. Whilst it would be fair to say not too many of those came against the stronger clubs at this level, he is a flat track bully facing clubs in the mid-table/bottom half bracket and Sunderland aren’t likely to have the answers to keep him quiet.

LEEDS (-1)

Leeds have a 64.4% winning record across the Championship season and they aren’t always the type of team to only just get the job done; they tend to produce rather emphatic victories. In fact, of their 26 league triumphs, a total of 14 of them was by a two or more goal margin. Ten of those was against bottom half opposition, which is where Sunderland are currently situated.

The Whites are the third-highest scorers in the league but they quite convincingly top the league xG figures so they are always likely to create chances and score goals. They’ll want to lay down a marker to show they’re over the Coventry setback and let Leicester and Ipswich know they’re not going away.

LEEDS TO WIN BY EXACTLY TWO GOALS

As mentioned already, Leeds aren’t necessarily a slender win type of team. They’ve won by exactly two goals on seven occasions in league action, including five of their last six victories. Matches can tighten up at this stage of the season in terms of performance because of pressure and nerves, so the situation is likely to be Leeds score and then add another later one when the match becomes more stretched. This has been the case in recent wins over Hull and Millwall.

In Sunderland’s defence, they don’t suffer losses by big margins that often. However, the motivation element for Leeds and the obvious difference in collective offensive quality in terms of output is why the case is made for this selection.
