Norwich v Ipswich
Championship match at Carrow Road, Norwich
TV: Sky Sports Main Event & Football, Saturday, 12:30pm

Draw

Both Norwich and Ipswich have their obvious reasons for wanting to win this game but these intense local derbies are not so easily won. At the end of the day, this is a top-six meeting in the Championship and whilst they are separated by a mammoth 23 points the reality is that over 90 minutes all possible outcomes are in play here.

No matter what happens, Norwich will still end the weekend in a play-off position, so a draw certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world. As for Ipswich, whilst a draw could potentially see them end the day outside of the top two, they still wouldn’t necessarily class this as two points dropped, at a venue the club hasn’t won at since 2006.

The meeting earlier in the season finished all square at Portman Road and Ipswich have won only two of nine encounters this season against top-six opponents, whilst Norwich have won only once in ten against the same bracket of clubs.

Both Teams to Score

If the last head-to-head battle from December is anything to go by then this selection shouldn’t give backers too much to be worried about. Ipswich is a team purely built around scoring goals and some recent defensive frailties are something Norwich may look to take advantage of. The Tractor Boys do still have the joint-third highest clean sheet tally in the Championship but have earned only five out of a possible 17 clean sheets in 2024.

As for Norwich, they have firmly made Carrow Road a fortress, last tasting defeat here in November. Since then, it’s 13 unbeaten in all competitions in front of their own supporters and this is ultimately where The Canaries produce their best. Only twice in league action have they failed to score at home, both occasions coming last year. Only in four fixtures across the campaign has Ipswich not found the back of the net; strengthening the case for Both Team to Score to land.

Josh Sargent Anytime Goalscorer

If Norwich are good for a goal then their talisman striker Josh Sargent has to be high up on the agenda. The American alone is responsible for just shy of 20% of their league goals and that is despite missing the vast majority of September through to December with injury. No other striker in the league is in better form having netted ten goals across his last 13 appearances.

Those ten goals have come from within a total of 17 shots on target; demonstrating his composure and clinical instinct. This is a player at the very top of his game and confidence levels are surely through the roof. With the home crowd roaring him on, Ipswich will struggle to keep the talented forward at bay.

Conor Chaplin Anytime Goalscorer

As mentioned, Ipswich are normally a good bet for a goal and one player that has contributed towards that is attacking midfielder Conor Chaplin. He is their joint-top scorer along with Nathan Broadhead, and with January signing Kieffer Moore, who has six goals, a big injury doubt, big responsibility will be on the shoulders of the 27-year-old.

He has been ticking over just nicely of late, having recorded four goals over his last eight appearances, plus with him averaging 3.67 shots on goal over his past seven games, he is clearly someone Ipswich look to get on the ball in and around the final third.
Norwich have conceded an average of 12.33 shots on goal across Championship matches in 2024, so they clearly invite the kind of pressure someone like Chaplin could easily exploit.

A Goal Scored in Both Halves

No other Championship team has managed to score a goal in both halves of a match compared to Ipswich. This is another reflection of their pure attacking state, but Norwich are also joint-fifth in this respective league tally, which is also another likely indication of what should be an entertaining contest at Saturday lunchtime.

League clashes involving Norwich and Ipswich have featured at least one goal in the first half on 32 and 33 occasions respectively out of a possible 40. The two clubs are also amongst only five in the league to have scored 38 or more goals in the second period of games. It would be a surprise if both sets of 45 minutes did not feature a goal.
