Championship match at Portman Road

BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE

Ask any football supporter the first word they think of when asked of Ipswich and Southampton, then the answer should be goals! This top-four Championship battles puts together two of the top-three highest scorers and this is also a top-four battle in relation to xG tally.

The match state is important as well. Ipswich may be proudly sitting top of the table but, with Leeds and Leicester hot on their heels, they can’t take their foot off the gas. Southampton aren’t completely out of the equation either, win here and their two games in hand and feasibly they could be a point behind Ipswich.

This is also a top-three match for number of shots on goal, whereas Southampton also top the league for percentage of games featuring both teams scoring. Only four home clean sheets for Ipswich also reflects their high risk style of play, similar to that of Southampton.

OVER 3.5 GOALS

The feeling here is that this could easily turn into something of a basketball game with frequent chances at either end. There is absolutely no chance either team will play for the draw.

The two teams are seeing an average of over 3 goals per league game across the campaign, and hopefully one more can be found from the attacking talent on show. To continue the top-three theme, both Ipswich and Southampton are inside this bracket for league fixtures containing a minimum of four goals.

13 of Town’s 19 at home has seen the selection pay out, and whilst Southampton’s away contests overall haven’t reached those heights, three of their last five on the road in Championship action has achieved Over 3.5 Goals.

ADAM ARMSTRONG TO SCORE OR ASSIST

Undoubtedly one of the players of the season in the Championship is Adam Armstrong, regardless of what he achieves in the remaining games. Only Sammie Szmodics of Blackburn has netted more goals and ironically neither has played the entire season as out-and-out strikers.

Armstrong finds himself on the right of a front three these days, which is why he has also managed 11 assists along the way. The 27-year-old is the first name on Russell Martin’s team sheet and he has rather incredibly either scored or assisted in just over 62% of his league appearances all season.

Ipswich left back Leif Davis is very forward-minded and that is an area Armstrong could have some joy with. Ultimately, if Southampton are to score here then it would be a shock if Armstrong didn’t Score or Assist. The stats alone suggests he should.

FLYNN DOWNES TO COMMIT 2 OR MORE FOULS

As mentioned, this could easily be quite a back and forth encounter involving two busy goalkeepers. A big degree of pressure is therefore likely to be placed upon the more defensive-minded midfielder in each eleven.

Sam Morsy for Ipswich is no stranger to getting stuck in, but Southampton’s Flynn Downes is another that often attracts the attention of the referee. Whilst he has a big role to do in helping them build from the back, he also breaks up play.

His midfield partners Will Smallbone and Stuart Armstrong are not exactly defensive types. Downes has conceded a total of ten fouls across his previous six appearances alone; committing two or more in four of those.

Ipswich will give Southampton plenty to think about and Downes will see his defensive responsibilities tested pretty severely. Also, with eight bookings to his name, this proves he is no stranger to putting in strong challenges. I like Downes To Commit 2 Or More Fouls.

LEIF DAVIS ANYTIME ASSIST

Adam Armstrong isn’t the only player on the pitch amongst those most likely for a goal contribution at Portman Road on Monday. Ipswich left back Leif Davis is another that has been a frequent assister of goals.

In fact, he is joint-top of the Championship assist charts alongside Leeds forward Georginio Rutter with 15. Incredible for a full back!

He is without question one of their main avenues of attack and with Ipswich fielding a powerful target man striker in the form of Kieffer Moore (and George Hirst earlier in the season) it is understandable why that is such a lethal combination.

Davis also averages just shy of three key passes per game; which is the final pass prior to a shot on goal. I fancy Davis to grab an Anytime Assist.
